The First Ten Focus Group Feedback for The Kahler Files #4: Dream a Little Dream

Because The Kahler Files #4 was Book of the Day, some of our most trusted members have carefully looked over the cover, the description, and other aspects of this book as a part of purchase-intent focus group. We then asked each participant in the focus group if they planned to buy and read the book, and why they planned to buy and read the book or not. Their answer to that question and reasons are displayed below. We call this awesome feature The First Ten Focus Group.

Keep in mind, the responses from the members are not reviews. This is purchase-intent focus group which means the participants are people who have NOT yet bought or read your book. A purchase-intent focus group is an important and extremely useful marketing tool for any product, not just books. For other products, you might walk on the street and show people an item in a package and poll them about whether they would buy if or $X or not. These kind of focus groups are one of the ways big marketing companies find the ideal price points for products and test the effectiveness of different packaging. The focus group can help you identify your market so you how to target ads of your book, and it can (but may not) provide you new useful info about your "packaging" (e.g. your book cover, your book synopsis on Amazon, etc.). The point of the focus group comments is to give you information from people who have not bought or read your book about why they plan to buy your book which will help you in marketing the book. These are not reviews or critiques of your book because they are not from people have read the book. This is a marketing tool, not reviews. The trick of book marketing and book advertising is that you have to convince people who have not read your book yet that your book is worth buying and reading. For marketing, it doesn't matter much if people love your book after reading it if you cannot convince potential buyers before they read it that they will love it.

IMPORTANT: Any score over 10% is considered very good. And any score above 0% is acceptable. This is because we only poll about 20 or so readers, and all readers have to say "no" to almost all books. Over a million books are published each year. Even a very active reader cannot come close to even reading 1% of books out there.

This is also why publishing books is such a tough industry.

I would not have sampled this book outside this program because I wasn't intrigued by its OBC review, and neither its cover nor title intrigued me.
The story starts with Barry experiencing a scary and unusual trance. Much of the first ten pages showed Barry recovering and pondering his nightmarish trance. As I didn't like anything in the bit I read, I won't be completing this book.
I think this book was professionally edited because I didn't notice any errors in it. I don't think this book needs any improvement.

I don’t usually read books in a series out of order, so I wouldn’t have sampled this book if it hadn’t been part of the First Ten program. The official OBC review did not convince me. I like that the author clearly shows the reader that Barry was suffering from some sort of trauma from the outset. I did not see any typos, and I don’t think that there was anything else that could’ve been done better. However, the book is too gratuitously graphic for my taste. I won’t be reading the rest of the book.

I was initially interested in reading this book because of the favourable official Online Book Club review it has. The cover also piqued my interest. Reading the first ten pages affirmed my thoughts on this book. I found the story captivating. Generally, my enjoyment of the pages I sampled has made me want to purchase the book to continue reading it. I could tell the book was professionally edited because I did not come across any typos or errors while reading. What I enjoyed most was how good the writing was. It just flowed seamlessly. I can tell that this is going to be a gripping story to read. I like the book as it is. I don't think there's anything that needs to be improved on.

The overall appearance of the book is interesting, but not very eye-catching, in my opinion. When I read through the official OBC review, I felt that I wouldn't be able to appreciate the book since I'm not usually fond of reading spy novels, especially ones involving sex and violence. If I weren't a part of this program, I wouldn't have read the sample at all since the book's cover, genres, and summary didn't interest me enough to want to check it out willingly.

When I finished sampling the first ten pages, I decided to read the rest of the book. The contents seemed professionally edited so far, and the author's writing style was surprisingly descriptive and captivating. The first part in the book, however, deterred my interest due to the sex scene. Things began to pick up when Barry suddenly had a hallucination -- or was it? -- about his bed partner Marta suddenly transforming into a tigress and then killing him gruesomely. I became curious as to why something that vivid happened right in the middle and I wondered if it was a coincidence. After this, another particular event occurred in which a woman's car suddenly blew up right when the traffic light changed color. Due to these interesting events, I am planning to read more of the book and discover the true story behind them.

Since I enjoyed the sample so far, I don't think there are any improvements the author needs to make.

The title "The Kahler Files #4" indicates that this could be a Nazi story. The cover with the Cuban flag indicates a different context. There are no Amazon customer ratings, so it's hard to tell if I should sample the book or not. The Amazon summary gives a clear description of the story, which is about a person Kahler trying to save the world from a potential nuclear incident in Cuba. As I got intrigued in the story, I would have sampled the book even if not for the First Ten program. As I sampled through the book, I found the narration describing the protagonist having a scary dream. As I am interested in the overall story, I am going to read this book in full. I found the sample professionally edited. There were no mechanical or grammatical errors in the sample. What I liked most about the book is its very interesting story. I don't have any recommendations for the improvement of the book. Although I found one OBC review of the book, my decision to read the book in full is based on my own sampling.

Just by looking at the title and the cover photo, I know that I will not finish reading this book because of the genre. The book is already in the 4th series, which I'm not interested in reading. I rather start reading the prequels than to start with number 4. The sample is quite captivating because of the romantic scene. Fortunately, I read the OBC review, which is very helpful in describing about the contents of the book, but it doesn't affect my decision. The sample also has no typos, which I assume that the book is professionally edited. There's nothing I can recommend for improvement because it flows well.

The cover and the official review from OBC are alright. However, there are no ratings on Amazon. Since the blurb is promising, I decided to give the sample a try. It begins with the narrator, Barry, who is having sex with Marta. Suddenly, she transforms into a tigress and tears Barry's throat apart. Later, he discovers that it's just his imagination. Nonetheless, he is unable to discard his fear until he talks with Kahler.

I like the smooth flow of the plot. The editing looks good, and I have no suggestions for improvement. However, the story is a bit obscure. Besides, the sexual scenes are not to my taste. Since the book can't pique my interest, I won't buy it.

Error example: Her tongue probed my teeth, snaked between them. -> I think it should be "and" instead of the comma.

I am familiar with this series. I remember I wanted to read Book 1 when it was BOTD, but the Kindle version was not available in my country, and the paperback was too expensive. Now we have Book 4, but I am not keen on reading it without the first three. I wouldn't have sampled this outside of the program. The sample pages are hot; the book starts with Barry and Marta involved in bed calisthenics. That confirmed the decision for me: NO to the book. I do not appreciate erotica so soon in the story. Also, other than the fact that Marta is Cuban, nothing in the sample is related to the main plotline described in the blurb. I would have wanted to explore Cuba; it would have been an interesting escape to the Caribbean. From the bit I read, I can't say I like anything in the sample. I cannot pinpoint any needed improvement in the text, though; other readers may like the way the story commences. I also did not see any errors. As is usual with thrillers, sentence fragments are used liberally to heighten suspense. The author may wish to tweak the cover, though. The title of the book is too small compared to the title of the series. I also think the Cuban flag is too large. The official OBC reviewer gave the book high marks but noted that the beginning dragged a bit. They also emphasized that the book had sex, violence, and profanity. Well, the sample alone had all three.

This book has a very catchy beginning. From its onset, I already felt like I need to know more. Was Barry Sandler hallucinating and imagining a shapeshifter? Is the woman he was in bed with even real? When I saw this book's cover, I did not imagine it would have such intense romance in it. It seemed to me like a political-oriented book. Having read the OBC review, it suggested the same genre. After I sampled the first ten pages, I got encouraged that it has a load of surprises. I loved most the descriptions of events that imprinted pictures in my head of what is happening. If I only sampled the first ten pages, I might not have read the book since it suggests a lot of politics. There is nothing I did not like about this book and I would love to read it. I did not find any errors and I believe it may be professionally edited. I only suggest the author re-designs the cover to show that it also includes a bit of romance in order to entice romance lovers to read it. Otherwise, it's a great book.
I will buy and read this book.

When I read the OBC reviewer’s summary of this book, I was certain that it wouldn’t be a good choice for me. I don’t usually enjoy espionage thrillers and this one didn’t seem any different. However, the blurb on Amazon was sufficiently interesting to make think it might be worth a closer look. The cover wasn’t all that exciting and the title didn’t lend any insight into the contents of this book. However, once I started reading I was hooked. The first few pages were a mix of erotica and fantasy, and I was quite intrigued by where this story seemed to be going. I really loved the intensely descriptive language that the author uses and the shock intro at the start of chapter one. There wasn’t anything I disliked about this story, nor is there anything I can suggest to improve it. There were absolutely no errors in the sample and I’m sure this book was professionally edited. In spite of these positives, I doubt I would read the whole thing as I really don’t enjoy this genre no matter how well-written it might be.

I wouldn’t have sampled the book based on the blurb, as I am not interested in the premise. The book begins with a sensual scene between a man named Barry and a woman named Marta. I like how descriptive the author is. It is clear that Safflind is a very skilled writer. I disliked nothing, and I didn’t see anything that needed improvement. The text is well edited. However, I’m not going to read the book, as I’m not interested in the premise. The official OBC review did not affect my decision.

I neither find the cover nor the title catchy enough to check out the book outside the program. The subtitle does not seem to relate to the book cover. I suggest using images that somehow associate with the subtitle. The blurb says there are political espionage and mysticism. They seem like a curious mix. What I appreciate after sampling is the vivid description in the narrative. However, after the intense and steamy opening, I find the pace slow for my taste. As for editing, I did not notice any issues. Likewise, the official OnlineBookClub review is insightful. It made me reconsider keeping this book in mind, but I will pass for now.

I never would’ve sampled this book on my own because the title clearly designates it as the fourth in a series, of which I have not read. I noticed that the book received a perfect rating from the OBC review team.

I was assaulted by a sex scene right as I began reading, and it made me wholly uncomfortable. I don’t want to read about a woman’s nipples “playing” against someone’s face. If you’re going to write sex, you need to treat it appropriately. There has to be a semblance of “foreplay” in your writing to warm readers up to the idea of a sex scene occurring right in the opening chapter. You can’t just rush into it like this and take people by surprise. I can’t imagine how many readers this has turned away.

As uncomfortable as I was, I continued to read. I don’t understand the sentence that states, “What was a log unit worse than coitus interruptus?” on page 3. Though I don’t know what this means, the book seems to be professionally edited.

After reading the sample, I won’t be finishing the book. I don’t like reading books out of series order, no matter if the stories are connected or not. I also don’t like erotica whatsoever. I liked the author’s writing style but not the content.

The Kahler Files #4 by Eric Safflind is book that brings crime, suspense, paranormal beings, but also some historical fiction aspects. If I didn't sample this book, I wouldn't read it based on its Official OnlineBookClub review since its premise of Cuba constructing a nuclear power plant didn't attract me. After sampling it, I didn't change my mind and I won't read the entire book because of the reason I stated before. However, the book seems professionally edited, I think there's nothing to be improved in it, and I liked the fact that the author used some real historical aspect in order tk produce some of the fictional scenarios, which made them more realistic, in my opinion.

It was easy for me to guess from the cover and the title of this book that it is a suspense thriller. Therefore, I considered reading the OBC official review of this book to know more about the premise of the story. The OBC official review gave me the idea that the book focuses on Adrian Kahler, a psychologist turned detective with extrasensory abilities. This information motivated me to read the sample of the book before purchasing it. When I read the first ten pages, I realized that this book is not professionally edited because I found some grammatical errors in the sample. For example, the sentence, "With my eyes open, I could picture Marta, naked and beautiful, a transparency projected against the white plaster ceiling...". The sentence could have been as follows. "With my eyes open, I could picture Marta, naked and beautiful, transparency projected against the white plaster ceiling...". What l liked the most in this book is the scene where Marta was soothing Kahler when he awoke from a horrible dream. My suggestion to the author would be to go for a round of professional editing and make the book a bit easier to read. Anyway, I find the book very much entertaining because of the perfect plot of the story. I was amazed how Marta appeared like a tigress to Kahler in his dream. I decided to purchase this book today and read it because I may have a good time reading this book.

I would not have sampled this book based on the genre, blurb, OBC review, cover and title. It had too much of a military and action feel to it. After reading the first ten pages, I won’t be finishing this book. I did not appreciate the sex scene that the book started out with. The whole time I read the scene and the description of Marta and her “full, sensual lips”, I couldn’t help but think of how it fit the stereotypical description of a scene written by a man. The description there could definitely use some work. I did like the twist with the tigress and would have been more interested in how this played into the story if the starting scene had been better. The book did seem to be professionally edited.

Without this program, I would not have read the book based on the genre. I am not interested in reading paranormal spy thrillers, so reading the OBC review and sampling the book did nothing to change my mind. The fourth book in the Kahler Files series follows Adrian Kahler and his two employees, Barry Sandler and Stanley Egor, as they are on a mission to stop unscrupulous criminals from destroying the Juragua Nuclear Power Plant. I liked the short chapters and enjoyed the story was told from the perspective of Barry. The characters were also realistic, and the first chapters were filled with mystery. I only found three minor errors that did not disrupt the flow of the story. For example, I noticed a missing comma after "at one point" in the following sentence: "At one point I found myself holding my lids open with my fingers to keep the creature away." (Chapter 2; page 1) I also noticed a missing comma after "morning" in the following sentence: "On Monday morning Max Damron called." (Chapter 5; page 1) Considering the Kindle version is only available on Amazon.com, I would suggest the author make it available in other countries, too.

Following my reading the book's official OnlineBookClub review and Amazon page, I opted not to acquire the title. "The Kahler Files #4" may be read on its own, but I still do not think I would fully maximize my reading experience if I do not get to purchase and peruse the novels that come before it. Since I have not read the first three books, I decided not to read this thriller. I am also not interested enough in the fourth book's premise to have me wanting to read the first installment in the novel series. Sampling the book did not change my mind. I would not acquire it because my reading a preview of the thriller did not dispel the unpleasant opinions that I formed about the title before I sampled it. It is also because nothing in the Amazon sample convinced me I would enjoy perusing the entire novel. The first ten pages contain the first two chapters and some pages of the third chapter. What I liked most is when Barry compared Marta to a tigress while they were having sex. I did not identify any errors in the text; the book seems professionally edited to me. I have nothing to suggest to the author.

I would not have chosen to sample this book because of the cover and the summary. The cover did not draw me in because of the factory and flag. Not something I would be interested to read about. The summary also sounds quite political and even though it's fiction, I don’t like political books. I will not read the book. I don’t believe the sample gave me enough information about the book. I would have to read more than 10 pages to get a feel of the book. I didn’t mind the opening scene, but I was not expecting something sexual to occur immediately. I noticed no grammatical errors in the sample. Therefore, the book seems to be professionally edited. I like how the first chapter has a date attached, I am sure this will be relevant and allow the reader to make connections. I also like how this book can be read as a standalone. I can not think of any improvements to be made. There was an official OnlineBookClub review. It gave me more information about the book, which I appreciated. However, I still do not want to read the book. The book not only brings political elements but also history. I have no interest in the topic of the book.

Just based off the title and cover (along with the Amazon blurb), the book seems like a piece of thriller fiction. I am not in the market for such genres, so I would not have sampled it. I have indeed come across a positive OBC review of the book – but due to the fact that I am not in the market for spy thrillers (with a dash of paranormal and romance elements), I would not have changed my mind regarding sampling. After sampling for First Ten, I did spot a couple of errors. On page 2, there is a missing comma to mark an introductory phrase: "For a moment(,) shock blunted...". I suggest closer editing to improve the book. I suppose what is good about the book is the fact that the first scene is a shocker, which may help to pique the interest of the readers. The narrator (Barry) is having sex with a woman named Marta Cuevas, but somehow her upper torso turned feline, and her tiger paws ripped into his chest. The reader then learns it was a dream. However, I must say that I'm not a fan of the author's exploitation of the concept of the monstrous feminine as a way to gain the reader's interest. Additionally, I suppose that the description of the sex scene is quite poor (of course, this is my personal opinion); my problem with it is that it is too much of a male fantasy (and this is not because the scene is actually a dream). In simpler terms, the sex scene is extremely performative, which then contributes to further objectification of the female body. Hence, I suggest that the author thinks carefully about the need for descriptions of explicit content – does it actually contribute to the plot in a meaningful way, or is it just a piece of fan service for male readers, or perhaps is it just for the shock factor? The book would be more meaningful after such rumination. Due to the genre mismatch, I will not be reading the rest of the book.

The blurb for this sounds too historical and a little boring, so without being part of the First Ten program I would not have read the book. After reading the sample, I have changed my mind. The book actually started out really personal and interesting. I also liked that the narration featured psychological terms like hypnosis, but I was not a huge fan of how explicitly sexual the book started. I would not change it though, as I understand that this is just my personal preference. It also just did not last too long. The book was professionally edited. The official OnlineBookClub review did not affect my decision.

If it hadn't been for the First Ten program, I wouldn't have sampled this book based on its title, cover, or Official OnlineBookClub review because this is the fourth part of a series, and I usually don't read series. After reading the first ten pages, I will not read the rest of the book because even though it can be read as a stand alone book, I would prefer to sample the first book in the series before making a decision. My favorite part of what I read was the narrator's experience with Marta. At first I was hesitant that it was immediately starting with a sex scene, but I liked how it turned out. The book appears professionally edited, and it doesn't need to be improved.

The cover art is not exciting to me. Since this is the 4th book in the series, I would not buy this book from the cover alone. The official reviewer liked this book and gave it a high rating. I found no spelling or grammatical errors and believe it has been exceptionally well edited. The story starts with a bang, but I thought the graphic sex was a bit too much for the first page. The cover and title of this book are average. I would not have picked this up without the First Ten program because it is the forth book in a series. The first few pages were well edited. I have to say this book certainly starts in a unique way. I can"t say I have ever read a sex scene where one of the participants turn into a tiger. The OBC review mentioned that this can be read as a stand-alone novel. I did not realize this book had a paranormal aspect to it. The cover of this book fits perfectly with the genre and title and is what I liked most about it. It even gives off a cold-war feel that seems to help set the scene for the story. Despite that, the book isn’t quite my style, so I don’t plan to read the whole story. I would choose to read a sample of this book because of its title and cover. The title is enigmatic and can be associated with many things. The cover of the book is designed to direct the reader to the contents of the book, ie to Cuba and the nuclear power plant. I will not buy this book because it seems to me that it promises a happy ending, which is not in line with a serious topic. Reading the sample didn’t change my mind from my original guess. While reading the sample I did not notice any typos or errors and the book seems like it is professionally edited. I like how diving in the caves with crystal clear water was described so that Barry seemed to be floating in the air. I think the book should improve the beginning and make it more energetic. 'The Kahler Files #4' is a fictional tale written by Eric Safflind. It is the fourth book of the series. Barry was having a pleasurable interlude with Marta at Club Med. Suddenly, Marta turned into a feline creature and attacked him. Barry woke up from his stupor. He saw that Marta was human. Marta soon left. I like the way the author showed Barry's stupefied behavior after his dream-like experience with the feline. There is nothing in need of an improvement. It could have been "..her breath felt as hot as Caribbean air.." instead of "..her breath felt hot as Caribbean air.." This is a subjective opinion. Hence, it is not considered as an error. Apart from this, the editing seems to be good. I would not read this book without the sample based on the cover, title, genre, blurb, editorial reviews, and customer reviews as I am not in the mind-frame to read books of this genre as of now. .The OBC review is detailed. I will skip this book as I did not get invested in the plot.

Honestly, I would not have read the sample of The Kahler Files #4 if it hadn't been the OnlineBookClub's book of the day. The number four in the title indicates that it is a part of a series, so I did not think that I would be able to understand the story completely. I read the sample, and I did enjoy reading about the scene between Marta and Barry. It seems that Barry is not an ordinary person, which I also found enjoyable. I was still not sure if I would finish the book, so I read the official OnlineBookClub review for it and found out that this book can be read as a standalone. Because of this review and my enjoyment of Barry's mysterious character, I will be finishing the rest of this book. There were no grammatical errors that I could find, and I can think of no improvements that can be made to this title. Readers who like mysterious books that have sexual encounters and descriptive scenes will likely enjoy this title the most.

I liked the patriotic colors on the cover. The subtitle reminded me of a song that I like. The blurb mentioned political intrigue, which I don't like. Also, the setting in Cuba does not interest me. This is not a book I would have checked out based on the cover and title because this genre is not my favorite, and the cover did not catch my eye. After reading the OBC official review, I was a little interested in finding out what the story was about. When I read the first ten pages, I did not find any errors or anything that needs improvement. The part I read was well written and well-edited. The part I liked most in the first ten pages was when Barry had just returned from his Cancun vacation, and he walked down toward the bay at the edge of a cliff. It was foggy, and he couldn't see where the drop-off was. He heard a voice telling him to stop and to back up. I am curious to know if he was planning to kill himself. The book started with a graphic sex scene that was a turn-off for me right from the get-go, so I decided I will not be reading any more of the book.

I wasn’t expecting the trippy love scene with Marta turning into a wild animal. I generally avoid romance books, so had the OBC review mentioned this content in more detail, I probably wouldn’t have read it. I also don’t really enjoy political fiction, so I wouldn’t have been interested in the book outside of the program. I do like how descriptive the book is, so I don’t have any suggestions for improvements. The cover is also excellent at depicting the main themes. The book is the fourth in the series, and since I haven’t read the others, I would prefer to read in order if this series was one I was interested in. The editing appears to be without any errors.

The cover is interesting, and I would have sampled this story based on my impression that this would be a deep story. I was not disappointed by my expectations. The descriptive writing style was my favorite aspect the author employed. I could see Marta's transformation as if I was the proverbial fly on the wall. The story appears professionally edited, and I would not change anything about it. The OBC review encouraged me to continue reading. Normally, I would have bypassed the book because I have not read the first three books in the series, but the story seems a solid standalone novel. I look forward to diving into this book.

I can't tell much from the cover of the book, except that it's probably a patriotic story. The blurb gives me the impression that I should've read other installments of the series to get the story. Who is Kahler? Who is the Collective? The book lacks ratings, and I feel I wouldn't get the story, so I wouldn't have bought the book based on my first impressions.
What I liked the most about the first ten pages was how carefully selected the words were. For example, in the following sentence, the author uses "gurgle," which truly paints a picture: "I heard my voice gurgle into silence." What I didn't like was how cliched the description of Marta was: "No question that Marta was all woman now—five-ten and on the muscular side of slender. She had broad, elegant shoulders; firm breasts; a flat belly; and fur only where a woman should have it. Not a claw in sight. Her auburn hair curled around long, slender fingers as she brushed it back from her broad forehead. It framed Marta’s perfect oval face. Smooth, lightly tanned skin; high cheekbones; chiseled nose; full lips; smoothly angled jaw—she looked as stunning above the neck as below." I didn't find editing mistakes. I suggest expanding the blurb. The official OBC review would've convinced me to read the book if I didn't dislike what appears to me to be misogynist clichés (I could be wrong, I'm only taking the first ten pages) and a blurb that seems to imply the novel shouldn't be read as a standalone.

I don't like to read books in a series out of order. Considering that this is book four, I am hesitant about reading this book. After reading the sample, my suspicions are confirmed. I feel very lost and confused. I get nothing about the book or the characters except Barry having weird hallucinations during sex with Marta. The Cuban flag on the cover means there will be a plotline regarding that country. I didn't notice any grammatical errors, and I wouldn't change anything about the book. There is an Official Onlinebookclub review, but it didn't change my impression of the book.

I am a fan of the crime thriller genre; therefore, I would have checked this book out based on the genre. The cover and title did not influence or impress me. I was disappointed that the blurb mentioned that the plot includes nuclear reactors as I have no interest in stories that revolve around them. There are no customer or editorial reviews that may have made the book sound more interesting. I appreciate that the OnlineBookClub review mentions that the book also includes paranormal activities, which do interest me. Unfortunately, the first ten pages did not grab my attention to the extent that I would read the book. I did not see any errors or anything I would change in the first ten pages of the book. It appears that a professional editor has edited this book. After much consideration, I have decided not to buy and read this book because I am not interested in a spy thriller involving nuclear reactors.
