The story of Randy Love...at Your Service by Shay Carter follows the life of a young man named Randy, giving the reader a personal look into his romantic conquests and his determination to always look for the greener grass in life. Randy Love feels he can do better with his life and therefore he moves to London in order to move up in the finance world. Randy is the youngest of three children and is determined to prove himself by also making a success of his life as his siblings have done. Throughout his conquests, there are a fair few romantic advances made at Randy which leave him in a spin because he did not initiate them and soon he is running for the hills.

Randy’s character comes across as arrogant, self-involved and immature to some extent. Randy does not seem to care who he hurts or inconveniences; as long as he gets what he wants. His pompous attitude lands him in trouble financially as he is constantly grasping at straws to side step the mess he has made. Randy is lucky to have a big support system of friends and family willing to help him out, but he has gotten into trouble in the past on many different occasions and he has to juggle his options when deciding who to ask for help.

When Randy meets Nicky, he does not realize what he has with her even though his dad’s friend, Michael, tells him that she is good for him. Nicky does have her flaws, but she has Randy’s best interests at heart. Michael’s character is somewhat of a guide for Randy in the bachelor’s life because he has been one himself his entire life. Although Michael does belittle Randy by laughing at his self-inflicted misfortunes, he does try to steer him in the right direction.

Randy’s character development is minor as he seems to remain self-involved, pompous and arrogant with only the slightest growth of a conscience towards other people’s feelings. I feel that perhaps there should have been more to his character development other than just trying to prove others wrong about his attitude. In my mind, Randy will always remain cocky.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. I was taken aback by some of the language in the book and some of the romantic experiences were not aptly explained. Personally, I do not enjoy excessive crude language in a book. I struggled to finish the book because the story did not grasp me and there were no major events that brought excitement to the story. I did not rate this book 3 out of 4 stars, because I did not particularly enjoy the book. I did not rate the book 1 out of 4 stars because, apart from a few typo’s, swearing and crude intimate encounters, the English language is used properly and sentences are constructed well. There is nothing clumsy about the writing; it is just the content that is not particularly gripping. I personally did not enjoy this book therefore I cannot recommend it, but perhaps someone who enjoys this form of writing will enjoy it. Furthermore I do not recommend this book to anyone who is offended by obscene language and explicit content.

It's unfortunate that the book did not deliver as expected. From the title, I would expect a rather entertaining read on how Randy sweeps everyone off their feet with his charm and service, and probably does something significant with his life eventually. It's sad that he is introduced as high-handed and cocky, and remains pompous and inconsiderate for the rest of the book, without achieving anything important.
