The First Ten Focus Group Feedback for At the Chameleon, Turn

Because At the Chameleon, Turn was Book of the Day, some of our most trusted members have carefully looked over the cover, the description, and other aspects of this book as a part of purchase-intent focus group. We then asked each participant in the focus group if they planned to buy and read the book, and why they planned to buy and read the book or not. Their answer to that question and reasons are displayed below. We call this awesome feature The First Ten Focus Group.

Keep in mind, the responses from the members are not reviews. This is purchase-intent focus group which means the participants are people who have NOT yet bought or read your book. A purchase-intent focus group is an important and extremely useful marketing tool for any product, not just books. For other products, you might walk on the street and show people an item in a package and poll them about whether they would buy if or $X or not. These kind of focus groups are one of the ways big marketing companies find the ideal price points for products and test the effectiveness of different packaging. The focus group can help you identify your market so you how to target ads of your book, and it can (but may not) provide you new useful info about your "packaging" (e.g. your book cover, your book synopsis on Amazon, etc.). The point of the focus group comments is to give you information from people who have not bought or read your book about why they plan to buy your book which will help you in marketing the book. These are not reviews or critiques of your book because they are not from people have read the book. This is a marketing tool, not reviews. The trick of book marketing and book advertising is that you have to convince people who have not read your book yet that your book is worth buying and reading. For marketing, it doesn't matter much if people love your book after reading it if you cannot convince potential buyers before they read it that they will love it.

IMPORTANT: Any score over 10% is considered very good. And any score above 0% is acceptable. This is because we only poll about 20 or so readers, and all readers have to say "no" to almost all books. Over a million books are published each year. Even a very active reader cannot come close to even reading 1% of books out there.

This is also why publishing books is such a tough industry.

What is "the Chameleon" referred to in the title? And what is the relevance of that necklace on the cover? The blurb added to the mystery. I was intrigued by these cryptic inputs. The official OBC review reminded me of Notting Hill, a movie I enjoyed years ago. So while I no longer seek romance reads, I would have sampled the book outside the program. The prologue introducing Aire did not clear things much. Who was she? I noticed errors, too. At 2% of the sample, "'Ademas!' she added, stone eyed, determined there was to be no negotiation" needed "stone-eyed." "Adelaide Australia" at 6% needed a comma before "Australia." At 11%, "Maxim had played match maker" needed "matchmaker." I liked that "Notting Hill" was mentioned in the sample. I also think Ethan's complaints about his "miserable life" as an A-list celebrity were realistic. But I was overwhelmed by the profanity that Ethan was spouting. I remembered I had stopped reading romances, and the book's length of 600+ pages further dissuaded me from reading the rest of this love story. Maybe the author has to go easy on the swearing. The official OBC review gave top marks, but it couldn't make me read more than the sample.

I sampled this book based on the reviews because I couldn't easily decipher the relationship between the title and the necklace image on the cover page. Yes, I'm a part of this program. The sample begins with a scene of a young girl who is reluctant to follow the nun's order. I don't like this scene as well as I can't understand Latin words, so I decided not to finish reading the book. I'm glad that I read the OBC review, which gives me enough information about this book, like the love story between an actor and a midwife. The review helps me understand the plot of the book, but the reviewer warns that the book contains sex scenarios, which I don't like. I like the "love" plot in this tale. I don't see any typos or anything that needs improvement. I will not read this book because of the reasons above.

The title “At the Chameleon, run” and the cover that shows a chain do not indicate the theme of the book. There are only two Amazon customer reviews, which is not a sufficient number for me to decide to sample the book. The Amazon summary states that the story is about a character called Ethan who meets a woman and discovers his inner fears. As I am not interested in this theme, I would have skipped sampling the book if not for the First Ten program. As I sampled through the book, I found the narration describing a nun disciplining a girl child. As I am not interested in the overall story, I am not going to read this book in full. I found a sample professionally edited. I didn't find grammatical or mechanical errors in the sample. I didn't like anything specifically about the book. As a recommendation for improvement I would suggest making the narration more interesting. Although I found three OBC reviews on the book, my decision to not to read the book in full is based on my own sampling.

If I had not read the sample as part of the First Ten program, I would have read the book. The Amazon reviews did not affect my decision. The cover is beautiful and I definitely am a fan of romance books. After reading the sample, I have changed my mind. I would not change anything necessarily, but I just did not find the narrator very likeable with the over-the-top squealing and the "I can fix him" attitude. I would probably recommend the book to readers of romance who actually like those dynamics. There was nothing I liked. Also, it was not professionally edited. I found a sentence fragment that was "nor did Scott's shrieks" so I think it can have another look-through. The official review on OnlineBookClub did not affect my decision.

Although I wasn't interested in the genre, the official OBC review and other published reviews made me want to read the book. I found no errors in the first ten pages. Aire wished to see the cat giving birth and her mother would have allowed her. However, Sister Dolores, a strict nun, tried to take her to the chapel instead. I liked the slight hint of supernatural woven into the storyline. I did not like the profusion of Spanish dialogues. Based on my reading experience, I would read the whole book.

I had a chance to read the first ten pages of this book, At the Chameleon, Turn, after I successfully downloaded its sample from Amazon for free. I also read its official review, which was available on the OBC website. The review provided a detailed summary of what the book is all about. In the opening pages of this book's prologue section, the narrator starts by narrating a story of Sister Dolores, who yanked harder on the little girl’s ankle, Aire. Aire yelped as her chin struck the floor. I rarely read romance books. I’ll therefore pass on this one. I won’t purchase it and finish reading it. To do this book justice, I will recommend it to lovers of romance books. The feature that I loved the most in the first few pages that I sampled was the author’s splendid writing style. There was no feature that I didn’t love in those few pages that I read. This book seems to have passed through the hands of a professional editor, as there were grammatical or spelling errors in the first ten pages that I sampled. The cover was also another feature that I loved. It had a great design. In my opinion, this book seems to be well-written and edited, so there is no need to improve it further.

I read the first ten pages of this book, At the Chameleon, Turn, after I downloaded a sample. In the opening pages of this book, we’re introduced to two characters: Sister Dolores and Aire. The setting of the story is in Montilla, Spain in the year 1990. Luminita Carmentis is also introduced in the same section of the book. She was sitting on the bed, and her hands were wringing in her lap. The element that I appreciated the most in the first ten pages that I read was the book’s cover. It had a wonderful design. There was no element that I didn’t appreciate in the first few pages that I read. I don’t read romance novels. This explains why I won’t purchase and finish reading this one. I will just recommend it to those readers who appreciate the works of romance. My decision not to purchase and finish reading this book was because of its genre. There was a well-written official review on OBC website, which gave an overview of the book. The review, the book’s cover, and the editorial reviews had no impact on my decision not to purchase and finish reading this book. I didn’t find any errors in the first ten pages that I sampled. In my opinion, this book seems to be exceptionally edited. Moreover, it is fine the way it is, and doesn’t need any kind of improvement.

Outside this program, I'd have sampled this book based on the colorful cover with a catchy title. However, I'm not a fan of romance, so I changed my mind when I found out about its genre. The blurb, editorial reviews, and customer reviews didn't convince me to sample it because it's hard for me to feel the emotions of the characters involved. The OBC review didn't influence me to buy and read it when I learned that it has explicit sex scenes. Moreover, I didn't change my decision not to read it because I had trouble understanding some Spanish words in the sample. It started with a curious girl who wanted to see how her kittens were born. Later, she would become a midwife and a love interest to a movie star named Ethan. Their fling sparked a conflict with Ethan's social and business circle, as they believed she was out of his league. I'm not going to read further because I'm not interested in the drama involved in this book. I believe the book needs another round of editing because I found an error on the second page of the sample: "Some were as frustrated as him; but who wouldn't be, cooped up like this?" I suggest replacing the semicolon with a comma because it separates two complete sentences joined by the word "but".

At the Chameleon, Turn by Victoria Carisimo is a story about an A-list actor trying his luck in love. The beautiful cover page would've made me give this book a try regardless of this program. The OBC review and the blurb did convince me to read this book, and I liked this story more than I thought I would. In the first chapter, the scene in which Ethan is self-reflecting on the highs and lows of his life as a top star is beautifully written and made me fall in love with this realistic portrayal of the character and care about the rest of the plot. I will definitely be buying and reading the full book. I don't have any suggestions for the author; there was nothing I disliked, and I did not find any errors in the first ten pages.

Without this program, I wouldn't have read this. The official reviews from OnlineBookClub, the cover, the blurb, and the ratings on Amazon are fine, but the book's premise is not my cup of tea.

I like nothing in the bit I read. The plot is hard to understand. I have no idea what is with Aire's situation, and Ethan's part is unimpressive. The foreign words are quite annoying, too. I also suggest another round of proofreading. Since the sample can't pique my interest, I won't buy this book. The OBC review was helpful in making my decision.

Error example: She tried standing again, turning toward Luminita who, without hesitation jumped to her feet and offered her help. -> There should be a comma after "hesitation," as in "Luminita who, without hesitation, jumped to her feet and offered her help."

'Are you for real...? The inanity of it all was insane. -> There should be a closing quote mark after "for real...?"

Since I could barely connect with the book's title and cover page, I would not have read this book without sampling. The OBC blurb suggest the book is based on romance. This further dissuaded me from reading the book as I am not a fan of the genre. I flagged a minor grammatical error (She tried standing again, turning toward Luminita who, without hesitation[missing comma] jumped to her feet and offered her help.) I, however, believe the book was professionally edited. Unfortunately, I couldn't find something worth liking in the pages I read. The OBC review didn't change my mind in this book. Due to the romance aspect, I will not complete reading this book. Lastly, I didn't anything warranting modification.

A romantic story following two unlikely people forming a strong bond sounds like an interesting story. The premise made me want to sample the book. I like how the book opens with some turbulent emotions. It builds up enough anticipation for the narrative. The book begins with a little girl named Aire crying while a nun seems to be punishing her. I dislike nothing in the narrative. I see no areas for improvements either. The text doesn't have a single error, so I believe it has excellent editing. I will be reading this book because I'm interested in the premise. The OBC review helped with my decision.

I like the cover of this book, but the title is a bit confusing. Based on the title, description, and an official OnlineBookClub review I read, I would not pick this book to read. Romance novels rarely keep my interest. I read the sample pages and saw no editing errors, so this book seems professionally edited. I like how the book starts off with an intense argument between the child and the nun over the kittens. This book could be improved by English translation of the dialogue. Some of the sentences were hard to understand. I enjoyed the very beginning, but I was less excited about the actor complaining about having to stay by himself. This book did not hold my interest enough to keep reading, so I will not buy or finish reading this book.

The pendant on the cover hints at magic, but the title leaves me clueless. The blurb says it is a romance novel. I seldom read these genres, so I will not pick this book outside the program. Feedbacks from customer reviews are positive. What I liked after sampling is that it looks into the male perspective regarding love and relationships. However, I prefer a faster pace, and the book is quite lengthy to my liking. It is not something that I will read about this time. I suggest a more concise material for a quick read. For editing issues, here is an example.

Location 24. Capitalization. It seems “one” is part of a title and should start with the uppercase.

If I were not in this program, I would have sampled this book because the OBC official review said this was a romance novel. I am obsessed with books about people finding their soul mates, so I knew I had to read this one. Once I started reading the sample, I was shocked because I envisioned the story being one way and I got something else. In the ten pages, I learned that Ethan Farrell is a movie star who makes millions per movie. He's at this unsure part of his life where he's not sure of himself and it shows because he's always partying and drinking himself to death. The only thing I found difficult in the book was keeping up with the language because Ethan is British, so the book is written in a British person's dialect. I found no errors. Unfortunately, I will pass on this book because it did not live up to my expectations of what the story would sound like. I got borrowed in reading the first ten pages, so I would not want to waste my time trying to love something I feel no connection to.

The title, I feel, does not go well with the cover and the genre. The blurb is a little confusing in the sense that it jumps around a lot. The book has very few reviews, which is off-putting. Within the first ten pages, I found no grammatical or spelling errors. Unfortunately, there was nothing that stood out to me or that I liked. I did not like the dialogue at all. The dialogue between Sister Dolores and Aire was off and felt forced. I did not read an Online Book Club review for this book, so it does not affect my decision. Based on the aforementioned, I will not be reading this book.

From the cover and Official OBC Review, I felt certain I wouldn't be reading this book. I don't read modern romances. I read no other reviews or blurbs. I won't be reading this book as it's not a genre of interest, although it is very well written. There wasn't anything other than the genre that I disliked. What I liked most were the inner dialogues in the man's head as he dealt with his issues. We've all had inner dialogues with ourselves, and this one came across quite realistically. I believe that the book was professionally edited as I found no errors, and I have no recommendations for improvement.

I am a romance reader, and the blurb for this book sounds interesting. I like the opposites attract trope in romance. However, after reading the sample, I changed my mind. I don't like famous people as characters in romance. Ethan is an actor, and his and Ariel's romance doesn't interest me. There is a helpful Official OnlineBookClub review and a couple of favorable Amazon reviews. I didn't notice any errors, and I wouldn't change anything about this book. It's just not the type of romance novel I enjoy reading, and I don't plan to read over six hundred pages of a book I don't like from the start.

The title seemed odd and I did not understand the cover. The blurb's second paragraph has a sentence with over 40 words, and the OBC review only gave the book three out of four stars. Because of those four things, I was not convinced to read the book. I liked that the Prologue was set in Spain, and I liked the Spanish dialogue that was sprinkled throughout the pages that I read. I did not see any errors. I did not like the character of Ethan Farrell. I am not going to finish reading the book because the blurb mentioned the author had an unconventional writing style. I do not have any suggestions for the author.

I would not have sampled this book based on the genre, blurb, OBC review, cover, title, editorial reviews, and customer reviews. The book had a hashtag that described it as erotica, which I don't usually read. After reading the first ten pages, I won't be finishing this book. I didn't like the use of Spanglish. There were multiple phrases written in both Spanish and English. It would have been more realistic to use one or the other. This could use improvement. The editing could also use improvement as I noticed several errors within the first ten pages that told me the book was not professionally edited. These were mostly punctuation errors. For example, "Montilla Spain" should be separated by a comma. This was the very first heading. I did like that there were headings with the year and location. This is always helpful for orientation when reading.

After reviewing the title, genre, cover, blurb, and review of this book, I would not have read this book. I'm not a big fan of romance novels and this one didn't seem exciting enough for me. After reading the first ten pages I didn't change my mind and therefore will not be buying and reading the rest of this book. I found certain parts of the sample that I read amusing. The hoops that Mike had to jump through to get a cigarette, for example, made me chuckle. That being said, I just wasn't interested enough in this book to make me pick up a genre I'm not used to reading. The book looked well written and edited; there weren't any errors that I picked up on in the sample. The thing I would have improved from the sample I read is on the choice of how to spell the sound "Hm". In any other book that I have read, it was spelled "hmm" instead of "hm", and for some reason the missing "m" bothered me. There was an official OBC review, but it did not affect my decision at all.

I liked the soft colors of the cover background art, but I didn't like the childlike jewel tones of the title text. The satin background on the cover art looks a little bit like a romance novel, which is a genre I tend not to enjoy. The blurb and official OBC review confirm that this book is a romance novel, so I would not have chosen to look into it for myself if it had not been Book of the Day. Because I want to be able to form my own opinion about books rather than be influenced by others’ opinions about them, I choose never to read editorial or customer reviews other than OBC reviews, and so I did not read any about this book, either. I was glad that the author translated the Spanish phrases (at least most of them), without which the prologue would be very hard to understand. I was confused by Aire's character and what, exactly, she was supposed to be; she had visions, collapsed on command, hovered, and crab-walked (I think) all within two paragraphs, and somehow she (and her mother) knew what a cat that wasn't even in the room was doing. Her "powers" didn't seem to make any sense together. Ethan Farrell was beyond boring; "perfect" characters always are. He was pretentious, rude, and crass, and I hated him immediately and wanted terrible things to happen to him, even though he is supposed to be the protagonist. I didn't enjoy the sample at all, and since I know from the official review that the book will be about a man I already hate, I don't intend to read the rest. I found one error in the first ten pages: an extraneous hyphen in "this mad-man's circus" (madman's).

Outside of this program, I would have sampled this book because the title caught my attention, and, based on the blurb and reviews, it sounded like a nice enough love story. I didn’t care much for the cover. The sample was okay. I thought the prologue was interesting until I got to the end of it and realized that the nun was chastising a child for wanting to see a cat give birth to kittens; then I just thought it was strange. I find it difficult to point out something I specifically liked or disliked about the sample. I came across some punctuation errors, one of which consisted of a missing closing quotation mark: < ‘Are you for real...?> (loc 82) I don’t think I want to read this book; there was nothing really about it that pulled me in and held my interest. I won’t be buying the book. The OBC review didn’t affect my decision, as this came from having read the sample.

The cover and title of this book are average. After reading the blurb, I was excited to sample this book because the story sounds romantic. I felt bad for Aire, I have always felt that faith is something that needs to come willingly. The official OBC reviews were mostly positive. Some reviewers mentioned editing errors, but I did not notice any. The customer reviews and comments were also positive. I am a fan of romance and the paranormal and metaphysical elements are great additions. This story has caught my interest and I look forward to reading the rest. The title of this book meant many things to me. I had limited idea about the contents of this book after seeing its cover and genre, so I would not have read the reviews of this book outside the program called the first ten. This book bagged a few customer reviews and an editorial review that praised it. The OBC official review gave me important information about this book and motivated me to read the sample. After reading the first ten pages, I realized that the book was not professionally edited because I found some grammatical errors in the free sample. For example, the sentence, "At best he had someone to whine to, people who understood about the ridiculous schedules, the relentless paparazzi, and the fans." This sentence could be as follows. "At best, he had someone to whine to, people who understood about the ridiculous schedules, the relentless paparazzi, and the fans." In this sample, I liked Ethan's physique and his body maintenance training. From the sample, I learned that Ethan was doing physical training better than his trainers expected. Sadly, the irony used in the narrative caused some difficulties for me to visualize the scenes clearly, so I will not buy and read this book today. My suggestion to the author is to consider using irony moderately in the narrative. A round of professional editing can improve this book further.

I would not have been interested in reading this book outside the program because of the cover. The colors of the letters make the title inconspicuous, and the design looks like jewelry publicity. I did not enjoy reading the sample; there are many words that are in Spanish (perdoname, Hermana, gatitos), and it is confusing since they are not in italics; therefore, I am not interested in buying this book. Errors: Spanish words that are not in italics; the vocative "Aire" must be separated from the rest of the sentence with commas: prologue - "Stop it Aire". Nothing I liked. I would have liked the words in Spanish to be less: they are not necessary. The official review on OBC was very helpful.

"At the Chameleon, Turn" by Victoria Carisimo is a romance that illustrates a journey of self-understanding sprinkled with betrayal and fear. I did not like the simplicity of the book cover and did not find it suitable for its catchy title and informative blurb. I sampled this book because of its positive editorial and customer reviews and excellent three Official OnlineBookClub reviews. The book does not seem professionally edited since I discovered many punctuation errors. The first punctuation error was a missing closing quotation mark in the second chapter (" 'Make sure she gets home safely. "). I would not improve anything on the book because I liked its fluid writing style and appreciated how the author outlined Ethan's inner thoughts and perception of his celebrity, which makes me believe that the book has good character development. Nevertheless, I will not buy and read the whole book because I am not a fan of romance novels, especially stories in which a teenager falls in love with her celebrity crush.

The beautiful cover and title attracted me to this book. The title of the book aligned with what to expect according to the summary on Amazon. The summary and review on Amazon were interesting, and the description made a reader want to read it. The OBC review was also well-written, and it said to expect romance, so being a lover of romance, I wanted to read it. I find the beginning of the book a little too slow for my liking. I would not buy it after reading the first 10 pages. It did not give me an example of what to expect from the book. Being able to see the world through the eyes of Ethan and how the actor's life is taking a toll on him was an enjoyable aspect. I found no errors in the first 10 pages. I would have started with an example showing the use of Ariel's psychic abilities.

It was difficult for me to comprehend what the book was about based on the title and cover so I wouldn't have picked this book up based on these criteria alone. As for the sample, I didn't get attached to any of the characters, like Ethan or Aire, so far. Besides, the story isn't intriguing enough for me to continue reading further. Because of my lack of interest in the story and characters, I'm not going to read the rest of the book. But I must add that the book cover is beautiful.

The book has some minor errors. For example, 'No get out of jail card' should be 'No get-out-of-jail card'. I suggest a thorough round of editing for such errors. I read the OBC review but it didn't convince me to read the whole book. I didn't read the Amazon blurb, other editorial reviews, or customer reviews to make my decision to not read the whole book.

The title “At the Chameleon Turn” sounded peculiar to me because I tried to decipher what it meant, but all to no avail. I am sure my desire to understand the title of this book is enough reason for me to read the first ten pages, even if I was not part of OBC.
The author’s writing style got me hooked from the very first page. How she described the main character, Ethan, helped me understand his personality. The way she narrated Ethan’s struggle passed a message about the challenges of being famous. One of these challenges was him finding true love. While I enjoyed the development of Ethan as a character, I didn’t like that some of the information was unnecessary. Reading the book’s review on the OBC platform also ruined my interest in finishing the book. I wouldn’t want to read a story with an ending that won’t meet my expectation. Unfortunately, the OBC reviewer stated that the story didn’t end well.
For this reason, I won’t be finishing this book. Nevertheless, I have to commend the editing of this book. It was professionally edited.

The book cover and title weren't enough to attract me to this book. I felt the storyline sounded cliché when I read the OBC official review, blurb, Amazon product description, and editorial review. I got the same feeling from all of them. I read romance novels, but I try to avoid explicit scenes, so seeing that mentioned in the OBC official review was a turn-off for me. Therefore, I wouldn't have sampled this book without this program. The beginning of the book was really disturbing to me. I thought Sister Delores's behavior was extremely nasty. I think the author did a good job with the character portrayal, but I wasn't hooked by the first ten pages. I sympathized with Ethan Farrell, but he came off as whiney and spoilt. It's obviously irritating to have people controlling another person's life, but I feel there's more he could've done instead of sitting indoors whining. I won't be completing this book. The OBC official review, blurb, first ten pages, Amazon product description, and editorial review influenced my decision. The customer reviews didn't influence me. I saw some errors in the first ten pages, so I think additional proofreading would help. There should be a comma after 'tiles' in this sentence, "Sister Dolores yanked harder on the little girl’s ankle; Aire yelped as her chin struck the floor, the taste of blood and dirt as she was dragged from under her bed across the hard-slate tiles instinctively making her spit." (Location 13). This is one example.

I want to finish this book, whether I am part of this program or not. I would like to know what happened to Ethan and his personal struggles. The thing about being popular is your life is not yours anymore. It belongs to people who think they own rights to you. Ethan is not sure who he is anymore. An inward struggle starts and day by day he loses a little bit more of himself. I like the story and the way it is written. I like the pace of the book. The name and the cover complement the intrigue of the story. There is nothing that I dislike about this book. I found minor spelling mistakes like, an awkward nobody was spelt and awkward nobdy. My suggestion would be to send it for another round of editing. No other review, OBC or otherwise, or blurbs influenced my decision this was solely based on the first ten pages of this book.

I liked reading a sample of the book, At the Chameleon, Turn. Not only that, but I really liked reading its review because it was well-written and included a lot of details about the book. Sister Dolores, who pulled more forcefully on the young girl's ankle at the beginning of the novel, is presented. The young girl is resisting the evil impulse to kick the obnoxious old nun, the narrator continues. I decided whether or not to buy and read the entire book after carefully considering the well-written review of it on OBC. This book seems to have had great editing, as the first ten pages of it show. This is because I didn't find any flaws in the first ten pages I read. Furthermore, the cover was beautifully designed. I don't believe this book could be made in any way better. I don't read books with a romantic theme. I'm trying non-fiction books right now. For this reason, I will not purchase the book and read it cover to cover. My decision was largely influenced by the genre; it was unaffected by the book's cover, editorial reviews, or official review. In the first ten pages I read, the cover caught my attention. It was well-designed. In the first ten pages I read, there was not a single aspect that I disliked. After reading the sample, I think I will recommend this book to those who enjoy romance-related novels.

The book makes a decent first impression with it's generic cover design, simple title, detailed description, and few customer and OBC reviews. Since I am a fan of romantic books, I was excited to read the sample. That said, I loved the frank writing style of the author. There were some minor grammatical errors, but nothing that would affect my reading experience (Sister Dolores yanked harder on the little girl’s ankle; Aire yelped as her chin struck the floor, the taste of {replace with 'she tasted' blood and dirt as she was dragged from under her bed across the hard-slate tiles instinctively making her spit.). Unfortunately, since the story seemed dragged to me, I will not finish this book. I would suggest making the content pictorial to better grab the reader's attention.

Following my poring over the book’s official OBC review and Amazon page, I opted not to purchase the romance novel. I am not fascinated by Ariel's psychic abilities and how these abilities will affect her relationship with Ethan. I am not intrigued by how Ethan's past relationship went given that after his relationship ended, he found it hard to trust people. I am not interested in reading if Scott, Ethan's manager, will be successful in destroying the growing relationship between Scott and Ariel. Sampling the title failed to change my mind. I would not acquire it because nothing in the Amazon sample convinced me I would enjoy perusing the rest of the story. The first ten pages contain a prologue and some pages of Chapter One. What I liked most is when Luminita told Sister Dolores that Aire does not like praying. I noted two errors in the sample:

1 — “…she added, stone eyed, determined there was to be no negotiation.” — The phrase “stone eyed” is missing a hyphen (”stone-eyed”).

2 — “Chapter one” — The word “one” should be capitalized.

Since the errors I identified are minor, the book still seems professionally edited. I have no advice to offer to the author.

If I hadn't been part of the OBC program, I would not have read or sampled this book. I'm not a big fan of romance novels. However, the title sounds mysterious, and the cover art is entirely aesthetic. The Amazon blurb didn't give much idea of the storyline and confused me. The first editorial review was grandly positive but vague, leaving me wondering whether I would like this book. The customer reviews, at least, highlighted the author's characters as a strong feature. I read the first ten pages of the book and agree; the characterization is strong and grabbed my attention. However, I decided not to buy it and read the rest because I'm not convinced there is as much substance and meaning in this story as reviewers are saying.

I liked the characterization of Ethan because his thoughts were described very naturally and blended well with his dialogue. He was believable as a young Hollywood star. Emily was also well-written as a giggly fan. The story's beginning certainly didn't seem like a typical romance novel, which is meant as a compliment! I don't feel I read enough of the book to say whether there was something I didn't like.

One minor improvement, in the first line of chapter one, the word "instinctively" would be better following the word "spit." A part of the sentence is awkward, " . . . as she was dragged from under her bed across the hard-slate tiles instinctively making her spit." Tiles don't do anything instinctively; the girl spits instinctively. Otherwise, I found no errors in what I read.

I read the OBC review, which helped me understand much better what the book was about but it didn't offer enough for me to read it.

Without this program, I would not have sampled this read. Nowadays, with life being so busy, I don’t like to focus on lengthy books, especially if it’s main genre of romance. Therefore, the genre and blurb would not have appealed to me. The positive customer and OBC ratings do not affect my opinion of the book.

At 4% of the sample, there is an error with a Spanish word. The words, “déjà la”, is actually just one word, “déjala”, and it doesn’t need the extra accent mark above the first “a”. Therefore, the book could use another round of editing.

I like how the author was able to find different voices for the different perspectives in the book. For example, Aire’s mom’s voice as she calms her daughter down after mentioning the cat is eating the placenta, not a kitten, is extremely different from the irritated voice of Ethan. On the other hand, there is too much profanity in Ethan’s perspective for my taste. Also, I understand that authors feel the need to translate certain words or phrases from a foreign language to English. However, as a native Spanish speaker, I do not speak Spanish to then repeat myself in English unless I’m teaching my toddler a new word or phrase. Therefore, the constant translating seems unrealistic and takes me out of the story.

Due to the profanity and the constant translating, I do not plan on buying and reading this book.

I like good romance stories so this is a book I would read based on the cover, title, customer reviews, blurb and the official OnlineBookClub review. This is the story of a movie star who found love in a peculiar way. I liked the descriptive and emotional nature of the book. I could feel what the protagonist felt having to constantly be trying to please everyone.

I found no errors in the sample and it needs no modifications. I will be reading this story because it seems to have a good, emotional plot.

If it wasn't for this program, I wouldn't sample this book based on its title, cover, genre, blurb, OnlineBookClub review, or other reviews because I don't like books about celebrities (whether real or fictional), and I didn't like what the OnlineBookClub reviewer had to say about the ending of the book. After reading the first ten pages, I will not continue reading the book because of the same reasons mentioned previously, and I also felt indifferent towards the main character. From what I read, my favorite part was the prologue. I thought the characters were well written – I immediately felt a connection with Aire and Luminita. I also thought the author did an amazing job with setting the tone for both the prologue and the first chapter. I can't think of any way to improve the book. In Location 79, there's a missing closing quotation mark (‘Are you for real...? The inanity of it all was insane.).

If At the Chameleon, Turn hadn't been the OnlineBookClub's book of the day, I would have read the sample anyway because of the cover art and the description on Amazon.com. The romantic side of the story was very appealing to me, which made me want to read the sample more. There are two customer reviews at the time of this writing, but I did not need to read these reviews to read the sample. The author presented Ethan as a celebrity who just wants to be comfortable as himself; this provides insight into the emotional turmoil celebrities have with their lifestyle. I did not find any grammatical errors, and there is nothing I can think of that I disliked or thought needed improvement. An official OnlineBookClub review exists for this title, and I decided to skip this book because the reviewer said they did not like the ending at all.

At the Chameleon, Turn seems rather interesting—I found the OBC review of the book much more attention-grabbing than the cover. I did spot several errors in the text, for instance, in Chapter 1, the sentence, 'Are you for real...? The inanity of it all was insane. is not punctuated completely or correctly. I wonder if the time jumps will occur frequently in the story, and if so, if Carisimio skillfully accomplishes this or, as is often the case, they will leave readers confused, which is a huge concern of mine and a pet peeve when not done right. I liked the contrast between the innocence of the prologue and the near vulgarity of the succeeding chapters, but the dialogue from the prologue isn't really engaging. I like the idea of the book, but it just seems like another plain love story with nothing new, so I don't think I'll be reading this book.

I would not choose to read this book based on the cover and title because it seems like a book about magic. I would read it based on the blurb, customer reviews, genre, and the official OnlineBookClub review. I liked the prologue at the beginning of the book. The book needs no improvements. I will be reading it because it has an interesting storyline.

At the Chameleon, Turn by Victoria Carisimo belongs to the Romance genre, which I usually do not read. The title and the cover page were not much interesting. The blurb revealed that the story was the romance between Ethan and Ariel, but with a touch of paranormal phenomena. The editorial reviews and the customer reviews spoke highly about the book. Based on the above facts, I would not have sampled this book if I had not been a part of the program.

Then I read the first few pages, which included the prologue that described a curious scene related to Ariel's childhood and then Ethan's visit to Adelaide. I liked how the author had started the book making the reader curious. But as the book was mainly a romance, I decided not to continue reading after reading the first few pages.

There were no errors in the first ten pages and I did not see any area that could be improved. I saw the official OBC review, which spoke highly about the book. But it was not enough to change my mind.

The cover and title are appealing and mysterious but do not suggest a love story. Anyway, I think they should attract many interested readers. I like the romance genre as long as the story is captivating. The blurb comments that the story swirls around Ethan Farrell, a Hollywood star who meets a young woman like no other he has ever met. The two customer reviews are flattering. The official review of OnlineBookClub highlights the appropriate development of the characters. Based on these elements, I could try this book. The first ten pages were slow-paced since it took a lot of narratives to emphasize Ethan's boredom and the negative side of being a movie star. However, it gives a believable vision of what some celebrities may be going through and hiding behind a happy face. For instance, I find it terrifying that someone feels that is not real but an absurd and pathetic character. Likewise, when Ethan disguises himself to leave the hotel, the initial slowness improves quite a bit, as it involves the possibility of being discovered. This fact gave the story some excitement. I suppose the Aire girl the Prologue tells of will end up being the woman Ariel with whom Ethan will fall in love. What I tried glimpsed a well-constructed love story, but it did not impress me. The editing looked adequate, although I noticed that at 21% of the sample, it says “an awkward nobdy amongst...” It seems that it should be “nobody” instead of “nobdy.” Other than this, I did not see anything else I believed could be improved. In short, what I read was entertaining but did not completely capture me. Therefore, I will not read the rest of the book.

What an intriguing title! And I love the colors on the cover. I also like the blurb because it seems like a character-driven story. On top of it all, the book has great ratings. I would have bought it based on my first impressions.
The first ten pages made me hesitate about my decision. The opening is intriguing while a bit disturbing, and there are some very insightful passages (i.e., "He hated mirrors, they reminded him of who he wasn't anymore.") The characters' names were chosen skillfully, too. I could see "Ethan Farrel" in a magazine. And "Aire" means air, which is quite an ethereal name for an ethereal child. However, the back-and-forth between English and Spanish bothers me. I'm a native Spanish speaker, and it's weird and offputting because it feels unnatural, especially because of the misspells. There are several editing mistakes. For example, the following sentence should read "déjala" (leave her be): "'She does not understand, Hermana. Please, déjà la, leave her be. I will teach her the prayer, el Padre Nuestro, si?" (position 41). I strongly recommend fixing the edition. What brought me back to the idea of buying the book was the official OBC review.

I rarely read romance novels, and based on the title, cover, and blurb, I would not have sampled this book if I were not part of this program. I am not a fan of stories about the celebrity lifestyle. The first ten pages introduced Aire’s natural inquisitiveness and truthfulness and Ethan’s inner thoughts well. I did not connect with Ethan’s character, but I think Aire will be interesting as the story progresses. I will not buy this book because I’m not invested in the story. I don’t think it was professionally edited. There weren’t any glaring errors, but there were a few anomalies that I think a professional editor would have caught. An example is the inconsistency in the author’s name. The cover of the book has Victoria Carisimo, but the copyright page shows Vicki Grech as the author, and the blurb lists two authors: TBD and Victoria Carisimo. In the prologue, having the Spanish words in italics would have made it easier to read the interactions between Sister Delores and Aire and Luminita. An example is this dialog at loc 18, which was all in plain text: “What harm can it do? Es su naturaleza, it is in her nature.”

Neither the featured OnlineBookClub review nor the other limited editorial reviews or customer reviews influenced my decision. A suggestion for improvement would be to make the author’s name consistent throughout the presentation.

I like reading about how famous people can relate to a life of normalcy; therefore, I would have sampled this book. I enjoyed how Ariel was unfazed by Ethan's celebrity status, especially as it brought his ego down a notch. I think witnessing Hannah was meant to show him how precious life is and to appreciate what he has. I noted a minor typo. Beyond editing, I found nothing to improve. The OBC review did not influence me to read the book. Nothing online altered my decision to keep reading. I found the story intriguing and look forward to watching Ethan's character develop more.

ERROR: With shoulders set in geek mode and hands deep in his pockets, he crossed the road at the nearest traffic lights, an awkward nobdy amongst the group that had gathered.

I would not have picked this book up based on the cover alone because the cover art and title don’t tell me what the book is about. I can’t tell the genre or anything about the story from the cover alone. The onlinebookclub.org review that I read provided additional details about the story. The review was informative and recommended the book to readers who enjoy romance novels. This decreased my interest in the book because I don’t typically enjoy romance novels. I didn’t read any additional customer reviews or blurbs because the OBC review was very detailed. The first ten pages begin with a young girl being dragged by a nun and prevented from seeing kittens being born. The nun was very violent and abusive towards the child. There was a large amount of Spanish spoken in the first ten pages. I don’t speak Spanish, so I determined what they were saying based on context clues. I saw some errors in the first ten pages, so I don’t believe the book was professionally edited. For example, when there was dialogue, the author didn’t use the typical double quotation marks (“). Instead the author used single quotation marks to encapsulate the dialogue (‘). I have always used and been taught that double quotation marks should surround dialogue. I think the author could have improved the book with additional editing. I was not drawn into the story enough in the first ten pages to want to finish reading this book. For that reason, I will not finish reading this book.

I was not intrigued by the cover art of “At the Chameleon, Turn.” I thought the book was non-fiction, perhaps about marriage or love. The title does not make sense, but I’ll have to read the sample. The blurb and OBC review reveal the fictional romance genre. I am not interested in this genre. The OBC review outlines the plot of a love story between and movie star and a small-town midwife. This plot seems cheesy, like a Hallmark movie. I am hesitant to read the sample.

I found no errors in the sample pages. I enjoyed the flashback to Aire’s childhood in Spain, I’m not sure how it relates to the book, but I appreciate it when the author sets the scene. I dislike the cover art and the genre of this book. Perhaps more readers would be interested if the cover was spiced up and showed something to reveal the storyline. This cover change is my only recommendation. I will not continue the book because I dislike the genre and the cheesiness of the plot.

I wasn't particularly taken by the book's title or cover, therefore I wouldn't have chosen to read the book based just on those. I read the blurb, customer reviews, editor review, and the Official OnlineBookClub review, but none of them affected my decision. Because I'm not in the mood to read romances right now, I won't be reading the book. The lack of typos or errors leads me to believe that the book was thoroughly edited. It's good to know that Ethan Farrell detested mirrors since they made him think of who he wasn't anymore. The title and cover design of the book could be changed to something that better captures the essence of the book, in my opinion, to make the book better.

As stated in the official OBC review, important information in this book is scattered. The author seemed to want to tell us everything about Ethan's life in the first chapter. Knowing the back stories of characters is important, but bringing everything on at once was a bit overwhelming. I didn't like that aspect. A significant portion of their dialogue in the prologue was in Spanish, and the context was not always clear enough for me to understand. The actions of the nun and the little girl in the room also felt a bit disorganized.

I can't think of anything I liked about this book, possibly because it's a long book and I only read a few pages. Anyway, I'm not going to read the rest of the book because of the drawbacks I mentioned, as well as the fact that romance stories don't appeal to me. The book cover does not particularly attract my attention, and I would not pick this book up if I would see it in a bookstore. The customer reviews, blurb and OBC give an honest description of the book, but do not convince me to read the sample as I usually do not read love stories. The sample is well edited, but written in a superficial writing style. The stereotype of a famous, rich actor, is too obvious. Based on the cover and the title, I found it difficult to know what the book was about. I thought it must be some fantasy or historical fiction based on the pendant, but I was wrong. Reading about a movie star didn't seem like my cup of tea, so I didn't want to sample it after checking the blurb, the OBC review, and the Amazon reviews. I mainly sampled it because of this program. The book starts with Sister Dolores scolding five-year-old Aire in front of her mother because she doesn't know the prayer. The beginning is quite intense, which is not what I expected. The Spanish phrases were also a nice touch. Moving to Chapter One, the setting changes, starting to feel like what I expected. Since it felt shallower, I immediately lost interest. There is nothing I wish to change because this book doesn't seem to be for me. The plot doesn't interest me. I guess there are people who would enjoy it though. I noticed some missing commas in phrases like "Look at me[,] Aire". There were no major errors though, which means the editing is quite good.

Even though I am a part of this program, I fear I will not enjoy this book due to its bumpy narrative. Many sentences require a second reading to ensure comprehension. Aside from being unappealing, the book's title and cover also turned me off.

Despite the fact that I enjoy a good romance novel as much as the next person and found the first ten pages to be intriguing, I will not be continuing with the book because of the difficulty I had reading it.

I found a mistake, for example:
It should be 'I am grateful. I am (g)rateful!'
The capital 'G' must be a lowercase 'g'.

Despite enjoying the plot, I found myself growing increasingly disliking Ethan over the first ten pages.Ethan, a celebrity, is growing increasingly irritated by the fact that he is trapped in a hotel and can't leave without being followed, and that people don't seem to appreciate him for who he is but rather for his fame, fortune, and good looks.

Although I found the plot intriguing after reading the OBC review, I gave up on the book after the first ten pages due to the author's stilted writing.

I didn’t really have a favorite part of this novel. It was great that Ethan was so quick to forgive Danny for leaving a scar. Romance novels are one of my favorite genres, and I love the cover and title of this book, so I would have checked it out outside this program. I base my decisions on my enjoyment of reading the sample, so the blurb, customer reviews, editorial reviews, and the OnlineBookClub review do not influence me. I like the realistic aspects surrounding Ethan and his lack of privacy. Being rich and famous does have its negative aspects. The author shows that money does not bring happiness through Ethan’s loneliness in his opulent room. He was lonely but still sought privacy from his fans. The only thing I disliked about the first ten pages was the number of errors I encountered. The first was at 9% of the sample in the sentence, “Maxim had played match maker.” Correction: Maxim had played matchmaker (matchmaker is one word). I recommend that the author have a professional editor edit this book because it lacks professional editing. The beginning of this book was so fast-paced that it felt like my heartbeat synced to it's speed. From my perspective, the cover and title conveys little or no information regarding the events that ensued in the sample I read. Aire was being manhandled by a nun while her mother was trying to convince the nun that Aire was not like the other children. The book strikes me as an interesting read, but certain features such as the fact that it involves nuns and the likes, turned down my readiness to read the book. Such subject do not interest me, and it's a shame that I won't get a copy of the book. The OBC reviewer had a better opinion of this book than I did. However, I found no noticeable error in the sample I read.

Over a million books are published each year. Any given person could not even read .0001% of the books out there. This means readers have to be very selective. Even taking the time to look over reviews and blurbs, let alone read samples, is more time than most readers can afford for most books. The First Ten is a powerful focus group that addresses those issues. It creates a helpful tool for authors, publishers, and other readers.
