The First Ten Focus Group Feedback for Elastic Girl

Because Elastic Girl was Book of the Day, some of our most trusted members have carefully looked over the cover, the description, and other aspects of this book as a part of purchase-intent focus group. We then asked each participant in the focus group if they planned to buy and read the book, and why they planned to buy and read the book or not. Their answer to that question and reasons are displayed below. We call this awesome feature The First Ten Focus Group.

Keep in mind, the responses from the members are not reviews. This is purchase-intent focus group which means the participants are people who have NOT yet bought or read your book. A purchase-intent focus group is an important and extremely useful marketing tool for any product, not just books. For other products, you might walk on the street and show people an item in a package and poll them about whether they would buy if or $X or not. These kind of focus groups are one of the ways big marketing companies find the ideal price points for products and test the effectiveness of different packaging. The focus group can help you identify your market so you how to target ads of your book, and it can (but may not) provide you new useful info about your "packaging" (e.g. your book cover, your book synopsis on Amazon, etc.). The point of the focus group comments is to give you information from people who have not bought or read your book about why they plan to buy your book which will help you in marketing the book. These are not reviews or critiques of your book because they are not from people have read the book. This is a marketing tool, not reviews. The trick of book marketing and book advertising is that you have to convince people who have not read your book yet that your book is worth buying and reading. For marketing, it doesn't matter much if people love your book after reading it if you cannot convince potential buyers before they read it that they will love it.

IMPORTANT: Any score over 10% is considered very good. And any score above 0% is acceptable. This is because we only poll about 20 or so readers, and all readers have to say "no" to almost all books. Over a million books are published each year. Even a very active reader cannot come close to even reading 1% of books out there.

This is also why publishing books is such a tough industry.

The cover of this book drew my attention because of its Indian nature. However, I still wouldn't be sure about buying it. After reading the official OBC review, I found that the book had an Indian premise and was about circus-life. The idea sounded intriguing to me. I read the sample, and found it vedy good. Because I too am from India, the chracters seemed more at home to me. The story arc for the lead character seemed very promising, right from the start and hinted at a bumpy ride for her. I liked the writing style, and there weren't any grammatical errors either.

I doubt I would have looked at this one. The genre just isn't one I go looking for.
I didn't notice any errors, and I enjoyed the inclusion of Aishwarya Rai. Muthu is an enjoyable character, and the story does sound interesting. There is an official review. That would not typically effect my opinion either way, but the reviewer mentioned some graphic scenes. While it wouldn't completely keep me from reading it it will (ultimately) effect my decision. I am on the fence with whether or not to read this, but I am considering it. As I won't be purchasing it today, my answer has to be no.

I would not have sampled this book without this program. The review and blurb brought up content that I don't really want to read about currently. My job is tough and deals with the abuse of children, so I generally stay away from books about it. After reading the first ten pages, I won't be finishing this book because of the content. I just don't think I could get through the book. I did like the voice of the book, and there isn't anything I would suggest changing. The book just isn't for me. It did seem to be professionally edited.

The cover of this book looks very appealing and I was happy to sample this book. I liked the writing style, but the subject matter didn't really grab my attention. I thought this was a non-fiction story and was disappointed when I figured out it was fiction. The OBC review was very positive, but it pointed out some minor errors that I also was turned off by. Had this not been BOTD I probably wouldn't have known it existed. I won't be buying this book today due to the subject matter and the lack of editing.

Had I not actually sampled the first ten pages as part of this program, I would not have chosen to read or sample this book based on the theme. It is too heavy for my heart to read about abuse to women and children.
I am not going to buy and read the whole book because it deals with too intense topics.
Based on what I read, the book doesn't seem like it was professionally edited. I noticed typos or grammar errors such as punctuation mistakes - sentences missing commas, run-on sentences, dialogue with single quotation marks, a character selling their wares but no exclamation point was used, etc.
What I like the most in the bit I read is the beautiful book cover and the writing style. The narrator fleshes out the characters, especially the narrator very well.
What could be improved is the aforementioned grammar errors.
The book has an Official OnlineBookClub review that I saw.

Had I not sampled the book, I would not have read it. I usually read pure romance books. Having read the sample, I thought that it had a strong plot. However, there were many Hindi words, names and terms in the sample. While I understood some of them, I expect most readers to be confused by them. The book seems professionally edited. It has a favorable onlinebookclub review. The content of the book caught my attention and hence, I will buy the book today.

When I first read the blurb for “Elastic Girl,” I was interested in the premise and setting - I’ve never read a book about a circus in India before. After reading the OBC review, I knew I wanted to read this book. The reviewer made it clear that the author paints realistic characters and isn’t afraid to touch on tough issues. This is a book I would buy. After sampling the first ten pages, I agreed with my initial impression. The narrative is well written; I immediately felt immersed in the story and characters we are introduced to. Further, the author sets a poignant tone, and the text is error free. I look forward to reading more of this book.

Today's featured book has an OBC review that describes it as "a fictionalized account of the lives of circus performers in India." It's the story of Muthu, a girl that finds herself treated differently from her older sisters. I found this tale touching and, as a result, I will read or sample the book based on this review. Reading the first ten pages enhanced my original guess of the book. And I decided to buy hoping to read it in full. Based on the section read, the book seems to be professionally edited. I only came across one case of a grammar error: "Beside me Safa and Belli were both shaking, and Belli's..." (A comma needed after "Beside me"). I enjoyed reading about Muthu and her friend, Maheesh. They are children who have lifted the glamour of India's silver screen and made it their own. Even though they are poor and underprivileged, their knowledge and interest in their favorite drama, songs, and characters, make them a darling of their fellow villagers. By so doing, the weight of the predicament of being born to poverty is lessened and all over a sudden, they can live life with a smile.

I like the title of this book. It does cause a little friction in the tongue if one attempts to say it fast, but then, it's still okay. The cover art is just there, not spectacular or anything. The blurb raised my interest a little. I would have looked at the book outside the program based on the title majorly. The OBC review gave me mixed feelings due to some sensitive issues it reveals are found in the story so I initially decided against reading it. Reading the sample managed to complicate things for me in the sense that I'm now more curious but still very wary; don't want to get my heart broken, lol. I love Muthu and I'm actually scared of what she'll encounter in future so I'd rather not read. Still, this is the kind of book that will remain in the corners of my brain long after now. Simply put, I can't seem to make up my mind, guess I'm somewhat confused. The book seems professionally edited though I spotted a couple of punctuation errors like a missing comma, using the past tense form 'shouldered' instead of continuous tense 'shouldering', the use of a question mark instead of an exclamation mark in the sentence, 'They must pay to see such a star?' These should be improved on. Other than that, the sample was pretty smooth. As for completing the book, I guess I'll be saying No just to err on the safe side or something. It all depends on how long I ruminate over the sample in my head.

If I had not read the sample I would not have read the book because I do not think it is my genre and the cover did not appeal to me. After reading the sample I have changed my mind. I could really feel the emotion in the book, and I really liked the end of chapter one, when the title of the book became clear. I also liked the balance between dialogue and narration. It was professionally edited. I did not read the official review but this did not affect my decision.

If I were to sample this book based on just the cover or title, I probably would have sampled it because both look pretty interesting. I really like the cover since it looks bright and colorful. While reading the sample, I didn't notice any grammatical errors. After reading the sample, I decided not to finish reading the book. The sample was interesting, but I don't think I will have time to read this book. I also read the official OBC review which provided a more detailed account of what the book is about. I don't think there is anything that could improve the book.

When I first saw this book I assumed it was a superhero novel, one of my favorite genres (something I would’ve checked out whether it was book of the day or not). But once I read the amazon description I saw that it was far from a superhero novel; I was actually worried that it would be too dark and difficult to read due to the heavy themes. I dove into the first ten pages and was delighted by how well the author describes the setting. Yes, there were plenty of words I didn’t quite understand, but context clues filled in some of them. Just when things began getting a little dull the whimsy took over and then the nearly-fatal adventure forced me to keep reading beyond the first ten pages. The positive reviews put this one over the edge for me - I do want to read the rest, but I’m still a little scared of the rougher, darker scenes to come. I was also happy to find no errors whatsoever!

My initial thoughts, based on the cover and title, was that this was a non-fiction read. After reading the blurb and review I discovered it was fictional. The story sounded interesting based on the review but I am would not choose to read it based on the rape of minors. That is a no-go zone for me. I found the first ten pages started out to be quite difficult reading, mainly as I was unfamiliar with many of the Indian names of people, places, movies and certain clothing. These slowed my reading down a bit, but I became more familiar with it as the pages progressed. I liked how the girl got her nickname and appreciated that it was outlined early in the novel. From what I can tell so far, the book appears professionally edited. I would be interested in reading more about the circus antics but, due to the previously mentioned issue I have, I do not intend to buy this book.

I enjoy the cover of this book. It's bright and definitely intriguing. The title is also interesting. It makes readers wonder what this book will really be about. I'm not a huge reader of this genre. I read the first ten pages before I read the reviews. I enjoyed what I read. This family is really down on their luck, but their youngest is free and creative and adventurous. I really enjoyed her character. I didn't see any editorial issues. After reading the first ten, I could picture myself reading the rest of the book. I then read the OBC review and I also liked that until I got to the trafficking and taking advantage of minors. This is a huge turn-off and I don't want to read the book based off this just because I don't like to read about these kinds of things.

This is a book I would not have sampled on my own, due to the disturbing subject matter (enslavement, child trafficking). Although the cover picture is attractive, it has a light, fun feel which doesn't seem to jive with the plot and themes described in the summary. The summary appears to be professionally edited. It is a bit long, but I was able to get a clear understanding of the plot. The sample pages are well written with excellent descriptions. I also read the glowing OBC review, which confirmed my suspicions that the book contained disturbing topics. Despite the author's nice writing style, this book doesn't appear to my cup of tea based on my reading preferences.

I would not have chosen to sample Elastic Girl by Olivia Rana apart from First Ten on the basis of the cover alone. It doesn't capture my attention. After reading the blurb, I got the gist of what Elastic Girl would be about, and that both made me happy and apprehensive. Happy because I'm all about bringing awareness to the exploitation of children, and apprehensive because I know there could be some heavy scenes in Elastic Girl that won't make my reading experience comfortable. Upon reading the first ten pages and the official OBC review, I decided that I will not be finishing this book. Olivia Rana's writing style was engaging and I was sucked into the story from the get-go, but with mention of rape scenes in the official OBC review, I knew I would have a hard time reading through the story. I don't do well with heavy content like that despite my efforts.

This book seemed professionally edited and I didn't notice any grammatical errors.

From the cover, blurb, and review of this book, I probably would not have read it. Although a potentially very powerful story, the idea behind a girl sold to the circus just doesn't interest me. After reading the first 10 pages I did not change my mind. The book seems well written and edited, but the writing style and continuous usage of Hindu words will get on my nerves fairly quickly. This combined with the fact the storyline didn't interest me very much means that I will not be buying and reading the rest of this book. For those that can get past both of these things, I do think this will be an interesting book. I didn't see anything specific, besides the consistent use of Hindu words, that I would change. The official review did not affect my decision at all.

This book is well written and professionally edited. I saw no errors. I enjoyed being immersed in India among the people and the culture and experiencing a day in the lives of a little girl and boy who love Bollywood. I liked the story, but was kind of upset with Elastic Girl for not defending Maheesh who unfairly took the blame for her dangerous stunt. It's a good story, but the tone is quite dark and sad, and from the review, it sounds like it gets darker and sadder. It's interesting from the standpoint that it captures lots of reality, but for me, I long to escape that sadness.

Prior to reading the sample available for Elastic Girl, I read a review praising the tale of Muthu Tikaram and had decided immediately that I was interested in reading it. The cover itself does not endear me to the book, partially due to a personal dislike of feet but also because it looks somewhat plain. I think the blurb for the book does a great deal to promote its worth and it would have been enough to convince me to buy and read the novel.

Elastic Girl is raw and emotional from the very first page and I found myself enthralled with the story being told. I became quickly invested in the tale, eager to read more about the life of this endearing little girl. I do intend to purchase the book so I may finish reading it as the tale was enticing, well written, and impactful. From what I read, the book is professionally edited as I found no errors in the sample and was thoroughly impressed with the writing skill of the author. My favorite piece of the story is Muthu herself and the way she interacts with those around her. She truly is a wonderful character.

I understand Elastic Girl touches on some very sensitive topics and, if my experience with this book thus far is indicative of what the rest of the book will be like, I feel that Olivia Rana will do a masterful job of taking these topics and bringing them to light in an effective and respectful way. For now, I have no comments for any improvements the book may need as I do not personally see any. I am eager to read more about Muthu and the hardships she faces later on in the novel.

This book has been reviewed by a member of OnlineBookClub.org and the praise filled review did influence my desire to read this book.

It's such an interesting concept to me to see circus performers in action, and I've always enjoyed going to the shows. However, it's always been on my mind about whether the child performers actually enjoy what they are doing, or whether they are only performing because that's what they are told to do. My opinion for this story was quickly formed though once I learned that this story revolved around child trafficing, which I feel would be too hard to read about. Muthu's character seems like one that could easily fall for what others want her to believe, leaving her naive and possible in a bad situation. I've found the review for the book to be well-written and properly recommending the book to appropriate readers. To me, the cover art appears more of a non-fiction type of book rather than a work of fiction. Judging from the first ten pages and the review, I wouldn't choose to read this book on my own. My main reason for passing on this book is that I have a difficult time reading about children that are taken advantage of.

The moment I casted a look at the cover, and read the title and the passage about this book, I was captured in awe even before reading the first ten pages and the reviews. I will definitely buy this book and read. Reading the first ten pages did not change my decision to go with my hunch - buying and reading this book. It was professionally edited. OBC reviewer mentioned minor errors which I have not noticed in the premises of the first ten pages. I don't have any improvement suggestion to this highly rated book. The story revolves around the life of Muthu, an Indian girl who survives from poverty and child trafficking. OBC review strengthens my preference to read this book.

I like the cover of this book and I found the title interesting. I would not have picked this book myself because it seems like a sad story.
The first ten pages are professional edited and well-written. I enjoyed reading the first few pages, I liked that the Indian culture is prominent from the very beginning. The OBC review was favorable and mentions that there are some child rape scenes. Unfortunately, although I find this book extremely interesting and important, I do not think I am comfortable enough to read about child trafficking.

After reading a sample of, Elastic Girl by Olivia Rana, I have decided that I will not be purchasing this book today. I will be putting this book on my to-be-read shelf. If I had not read a sample of this book, I would have picked it up. While the cover of this book did not appeal to me, the blurb grabbed my attention and pulled me in. At first glance, I thought this book was a non-fiction novel, an autobiography to be exact. After reading the blurb, I learned it was a fictional novel. As I read the blurb, I became more curious about the main character and her story. As I read a few pages of this book, I found myself being pulled in. I like how the author engages me, with the family praying for a boy but got yet another girl. I found it heartbreaking for the grandmother to say the child is cursed, and that the family treats her differently than her two older sisters. These revelations and situations pique my interest to read more about this little girl and her family. Based on what I have read this book appears to be professionally edited. This book does have an official OnlineBookClub review. I found the reviewer to be highly engaging. They pulled me in and helped to solidify my decision to put this book on my to-be-read shelf. Based on the title and cover, I wouldn't have sampled the book because the title and cover didn't appeal to me. Additionally, the title and cover gave me the impression that it was a nonfiction book - a genre I don't usually read much of. I read the official review. The pages I read appeared to be professionally edited as I did not find any errors. I liked the way the author painted a picture of Muthu's birth and the event that followed soon after that sealed her fate. That being said, I didn't feel compelled to keep reading the book after I sampled it, this is because I didn't find myself particularly interested in the plot. That's the reason why I won't be reading the rest of the book.

I think that this is a great cover page. I was considering reviewing this book, so I'm glad that it came up for BOTD. The Onlinebookclub review was very complementary. It outlined interesting parts of the story, how the character got into the circus, and her family circumstances. It made me more interested in reading it. The pages which I read were well written and edited. The writing is easy to follow and I immediately liked the relationship between Muthu and Maheesh. I also found it interesting that only the two older girls were educated. It's such a different concept to people from the western world. I have no ideas for improvement and I would like to continue reading this book.

Without this program, I would not have sampled this read. The cover, title, genre, and blurb do seem interesting. However, in the positive OBC review, there is mention of sexual and graphic scenes, including raping of minors. This would have been too much for me to read about, and the leading factor in not wanting to read the book. Based on what I read, the book does seem to be edited well. It seems the author has written Muthu as a likable, spunky girl. I do find the amount of unknown Hindi words a bit frustrating to have to look up, but I understand it's part of the culture within the book. Oddly enough my attention isn't captured toward the beginning either. Between this and the fact that I know some raping of minors scenes are coming up, I do not plan on buying and reading this book.

The cover for this book is okay, but I don't care for the title; it sounds like a knock-off version of a superhero. Upon reading the synopsis and review, I knew this book definitely isn't for me. As much as I love the circus and its performers, I'm just not interested in tales of adversity. Insofar as the sample, I'm glad that it seems to be properly edited. I also like that it's written in first-person, as I feel it's easier to commiserate with the protagonist that way. I also liked Muthu's relationship with Maheesh. Aside from the title, I wouldn't change anything about this book since it is written well; it's just not my cup of tea.

The OBC review let me know this is a fiction book about a girl sold by her parents to the circus in India. I was interested in the book because it is about child trafficking, which I consider is a real issue. After reading the sample pages, I thought the book was professionally edited. I got irritated when I read Muthu says her parents do not send her to school because two educated girls (her oldest sisters) are enough. I liked her friendship with Maheesh, and how smart Muthu is. I will read this book because it is about a real issue that needs to be discussed much more.

The cover photo and title are very good. The Amazon blurb is also well done so I likely would have sampled this book without the first ten pages program. The OBC review was very positive and added to my interest in the book. It also gave a clear warning that there were some difficult scenes involving children in the book - which I appreciated. I enjoyed the sample. The writing was very clear and flowed very well. I was drawn into the story right away and was very interested in the characters. I did not notice any obvious typos or grammar errors. I don't read books that cover such difficult topics all the time, just occasionally. They are important books but they can be hard to read. I like the colors on the cover and find myself interested in learning more about this book. The OBC review paints a picture for a very interesting tale of what goes on in the circus, but I'm a little leery of some of the heavy subject matter. I enjoyed the first ten pages and how the story moved along at a quick rate. It was well-written and I didn't find any errors. In the end I didn't quite fall in love with the story enough to overcome my apprehensions about the subject matter to come later in the book. I will not be reading the rest of this book.

The title and the cover gives a clue about
the characteristics of the protagonist. But
I would not select the book based on the cover
and the title, and would still sample a few
pages to see if I like the book and would read
it in full. I am going to read the book in full,
as the story happens in a locality and a society
that I am familiar with. The narration is also
casual and free-flowing without being too complex
or boring. The book seems to be professionally
edited based on my sampling and I didn't find any
mechanical errors. The most I liked about the book
is the awareness that the book creates about girl
children not being treated in par with the boys.
One thing that could be improved is the selection
of the character names. Although the story happens
in the south India, and the protagonist's name is
in Tamil language, many North Indian names like
Gupta and Kapoor are present, which is usually not
the case in real, in South India. I did see an OBC
review on the book, but my decision to read this book
is based on my own sampling.

The storyline is an interesting one, and the beginning of the sample captured my attention. The author set up the atmosphere very well. I enjoyed the sample more than I thought I would. I liked the writing and didn't notice any glaring errors. If I didn't have so many books on my reading list, I would probably choose to read this. As my reading list is overwhelming, I won't buy the book at this time.

Elastic Girl earned a score of 33%.

In other words, out of the top-level reviewers who read at least the first 10 pages of this book, 33% plan to read the whole book.

IMPORTANT: Any score over 10% is considered very good. And any score above 0% is acceptable.

Over a million books are published each year. Any given person could not even read .0001% of the books out there. This means readers have to be very selective. Even taking the time to look over reviews and blurbs, let alone read samples, is more time than most readers can afford for most books. The First Ten is a powerful focus group that addresses those issues. It creates a helpful tool for authors, publishers, and other readers.
