The lives of youth are often coupled by a myriad of challenges stemming from unemployment, drug abuse and crimes just to mention a few. In the book Randy Love at Your Service, the author discusses a group of young boys who indulge into excessive alcoholism, spends most of the nights in the pubs partying and thereafter end up sleeping with the girls whom they pick from the pubs. They employ their hard earned money on alcohol and girls.

The leading character in the in the book is Randy. His life is full of many adventures ranging from sexual escapades, doing menial jobs and lots of drinking and partying. The book majorly discusses the plight of the youth especially university students in today’s world. Randy is so obsessed with city life and thinks that it is only in the city where he can get a decent life. He fails to complete his university education but luck fell on his side as he lands himself a job with one of the top banks in the city.

I loved Randy cunning character. His is full of comical adventures. The manner in which Randy removes the advertisement of a vacant house from the notice board is just thrilling. He was looking for a house at that time. He makes sure that nobody sees him and then plucks out the advertisement for fear that someone may get the contacts printed thereon and secure the apartment before him. Moreover, when Randy gets kicked out of his room, he places a glue on the windows and doors of the flat he was staying in to teach the landlord a lesson. He had been aggrieved by the landlord decision that required him to clean the communal parts of the compound. All this portray how stubborn Randy can get.

I think the author portrayal of city life is just marvellous. City life is after all not a life full of dripping milk and honey. Randy comes face to face with the hardship of city life when he is unable to find himself an apartment due to the high rental costs and available houses are in poor conditions. This compels him to seek alternative accommodation from his friends for some time. Things move from bad to worse when his friend Paddy keeps on telling him that he has a week to move out from his apartment yet he has no flat for himself. Fortunately, he manages to get a flat before his time at Paddy’s place runs out. I think such portrayal of city life is somehow educative to the youth who are impatient on getting to the city and starting a life there for themselves. City life is not a walk in the park!

On the contrary, I disliked the excessive sex scenarios that are too detailed. The book is so full of Randy sexual adventures that at times it leaves the reader wondering if it is a pornographic text. I think it is only right if the author maybe details one or two sex scenes but not all of them as is portrayed in the book.

I also disliked the author’s notion that university students don’t read enough these days and that university education is just a waste of time, money, drinking and debauchery. As a student, this just pisses me off. Furthermore, I think it is just mean to assert that some courses offered in the universities like media studies, sociology and religious studies are of no use to the economy.

I would recommend this book to youths especially those between the ages of twenty and thirty years as it offers more insight into the challenges they face in their day to day life. On the contrary, I fear the book should not be introduced to children of tender years as they are likely to be pissed off by the numerous sex scenes.

The author had done a good job but there are some few grammatical errors in the text. The author at times uses the pronoun “she” rather than “he” while referring to a male subject. For instance, the author writes “Curious she turned around” While referring to Randy who is a male subject. All in all, I would give this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I deducted the one star because of the few errors I encountered therein and the excessive repetition of too detailed too many sex scenarios.

decent review, but i think you've misunderstood the university thing - that is said by a character, not the author, and it's true that many older men - like that character that said it - hold that opinion. careful not to confuse every opinion voiced in a book as the opinion of the author.
i don't really think young children would get 'pissed off' at sex scenes, probably wouldn't understand tbh, parents might though.
