I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. Young adult science fiction and urban fantasy author Calix Leigh-Reign's "Opaque" explores issues of love, morality, family, and identity. Adam, a coveted Russian ancestor's successor, experiences a metamorphosis sparked by his meeting with Carly.

Adam and Carly, two teenagers, are followed as they learn about their magical skills and the mysterious relationship that unites them. The rich world-building, well-paced plot, and multifaceted characters of the book are its strongest points. In the midst of times of mortality and darkness, their developing characters explore themes of healing and perseverance.

My favorite part of this book is how Adam's character changes, which is a result of the thoughtful pace, even though it was initially difficult to relate to him. The lovely language and magical aspects of this novel made for an enjoyable read, in my opinion. The book has intriguing twists, an engaging mythology, and well-developed characters that keep readers interested.

There is nothing in this book that I don't like. I was engrossed in the book from the first page and couldn't put it down. With each page flip, the reader is kept on the edge of their seat by Leigh-Reign's brilliant storytelling, leaving them wanting more. The prospect of reading the next book in this series excites me as well.

Because of her keen intelligence and wise disposition, Dauma is my favorite character in this book. She helped Adam and Carly realize their full potential by helping them to harness their strengths and be the finest versions of themselves—emotionally, physically, and morally.

Through faultless prose and a meaningful plot that cuts across genres, Leigh-Reign's excellent storytelling captivates. Another thing I must mention is how well the book was edited; I could not find a single mistake. That being said, given the volume of violence, adult themes, and profanity, its mature content may not be appropriate for all readers. Young adults and fantasy readers looking for a gripping book are encouraged to check out this one.
