I just finished reading Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon. I give this book a 3 out of 4. Strong Heart is a story about Tom a old man living in the Pacific Northwest. One day while planning a trip into the mountains with his buddy William and William’s daughter Myra. Tom wants to visit his grandfather’s final resting place and return an old artifact to his remains. While preparing to leave the granddaughter he didn’t know he had, Sarah, shows up on his doorstep. With hesitation and a bit of nudging by William Tom agrees to take the stubborn and moody teen along on their trip.

Along the way Tom, William and Myra try to get to know a reluctant Sarah and tell her about the legends of their ancestors. Tom shares the story about the ancient artifact he found next to his grandfather’s body long ago when he visited these same woods as a young man. Myra points out how important the artifact is to their history and how it’s discovery would put a stop to a plan that the local developers have to build on the historic site. Just when Tom begins to see hope that he and Sarah will be able to bond something happens and Sarah goes missing along with the ancient artifact.

After searching for days she returns with an unbelievable tale about where she had gone and what she experienced while she was missing. Her story seems to be woven within the legends she had listened to along their hike into the forest.
Weeks after their return to town and after Tom’s ex-wife takes Sarah away from Tom, Sarah returns with Myra explaining that she can find the missing artifact if they return to the forest where she went missing. Sarah has changed and seems determined to prove that what she experienced was not just in her head. They venture back into the forest to find the artifact and face a few challenges along the way there and back.

As they attempt to return home they are caught by a forest fire that forces them deeper into the woods. Sarah insists that what she saw during that first trip will be their guide to safety and they all reluctantly let her lead the way. The path to safety comes with resolution that what Sarah experience weeks earlier was in fact not in her head and something unexplained but incredible happened.

Strong Heart is a tale that explores the history of the Pacific Northwest and it’s deep seated roots in ancient cultures. In addition to that is the story of how important family and knowing where we come from and who our ancestors are. I quite enjoyed this story and recommend it to anyone looking for a story with a bit of adventure and cultural legend.
