Review for Yesterday by Samyann

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars –
simply because it does adventure into past lives, but once we know who Mark is, it suddenly stops not giving a good insightful ending.

When you first enter the world created by Samyann, you are instantly transported into the present day Chicago. In a brief synopsis, this novel tells the story of Amanda and Mark who feel like they have a connection going back before their current time on earth.

It begins by a typical meeting between the two, as every love story starts, yet Samyann changes it up by it being a damsel in distress moment, yet he changes it around. Rather than the city male cop being the ultimate hero, you have the damaged female saving the cop form a possible disastrous event, basically implying that she saved his life. This automatically gives the sense that this is going to be situated in the modern day, and it isn’t going to be male driven to protect the woman. This instantly gave me an attraction due to it not going along the typical stereotype journey.

This is where the pure love story beings where the two are instantly draw to each other, even with Amanda not wanting to accept Mark into her life due to everyone she loves being taken from her. It begins with Mark fighting for Amanda to accept that he wants to be in her life. The language that is used gives it such an immense glow to the tale, due to just sitting back and hearing a man announce his undying affection for someone and wanting to treat her like a Queen. It may come across as a bit cliché in parts, but any woman would want a man to speak to her and treat her the way Mark is presented. I know at least I do.

The real story begins when both Amanda and Mark feel like they are drawn together by more than this world, but feel they knew each other in a past life. It’s clearly obvious to the reader that Samyann has done a vast amount of research into past life theory and tries to keep it very close to how people do actually go about it. This is where I find the brilliance of the tale begins because the language that is used when the story travels back in time to Amanda’s past life, where she is a six year old girl, proves how much thought and research has gone into this story. Even the language used by the black “slaves” give the accent that you feel you can hear it when reading it in your head.

Going back and forth between Amanda and Mark’s current life, and Bonnie (Amanda’s past life), it’s so cleverly done by it not being flung into a place to build up time, but it’s carefully thought out and adds to the current story between the two main protagonists to further their relationship. It is kept very clear that the tale is between Amanda and Mark and the past life events are only there to balance and give a clue to the question that the two are trying to find the answer to. Building the relationship between them and after 100 pages, then finally adding the past life connections, it really builds the relationship for the reader and the characters, to become fully invested to be intrigued on where this connection has come from.

For someone who didn’t know anything about past life progressions and normally picks up a fantasy or epic novel and avoids the romances. This book intrigued me every step of the way, and I was finding myself turning to it more than my current fantasy read. Even if you’re like me and don’t find romance stories that intriguing, Samyann does a brilliant job by creating a world where people feel they are destined to be with each other.
