While doing research for his previous book, Dr. Morton E. Tavel realized the enormity of the public's need for accurate information on a large number and variety of health-related subjects. So, he wrote Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks, an informational guide and reference source for the public on many common and relevant health issues. Unlike technical medical reference books, this book is written in plain language which is easy to read and understand. The book is also entertaining and humorous at times, which is uncommon in most books on health-related issues.
Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is also different from other books on health topics because it does not attempt to simply lecture and/or give advice to the readers. Instead, this book provides the necessary information and recommendations for readers to understand each topic and reach their own conclusions and determine how he or she may, or may not, deal with any subject. The book has three main sections - tips, myths, and tricks - and 62 relatively short chapters.
The first section has a lot of very useful information and tips on overall health and achieving a healthy lifestyle, such as tips on nutrition, diet, exercise, allergies, and others. The second section provides information to dispel some common health-related myths. For example, many people believe that childhood vaccinations cause autism, even though there is no proof to support this belief. In fact, the benefits of vaccinations are found to greatly outweigh any potential risks. Finally, the information in the third section warns readers about scams and tricks used to sell useless, ineffective, and even dangerous products by claiming to be beneficial for a variety of health issues.
All the chapter titles are listed in the table of contents for easy reference. Some examples of the chapter titles are "Eat A Good Breakfast: Was Mother Right or Wrong", "Olive Oil and Health", "What to Do About a Cold", "Belief in Conspiracy Theories About Health", "Gluten-Free Diets: A Mistake for Most Folks", "False Cures: Don't Be a Sucker", and "Beware of the Media Health 'Authorities'". The chapter titles are an excellent indication of how the entire book is written, using language that is simple, informative, entertaining, and even humorous at times.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book has quite a bit of interesting and useful information that is presented in a way that is easy to read and understand. The book discusses and provides information on a wide variety of common health-related topics. Anybody that reads the book will almost certainly learn something new. It is also a book that people should, and probably will, keep after reading it so that they can use it as a reference in the future.
