Historical fiction, a love story, and a tale of reincarnation, what more can you ask for in a book? Yesterday by Samyann appeared to have almost everything I wanted in a novel!

Main characters, Amanda and Mark, instantly feel a connection and yet they can’t quite explain why they feel like they’ve met before. Can an old, beautiful antique clock help explain their connection? The book jumps back and forth between Civil War era and present day, each time period featuring our protagonist, Amanda and her reincarnated self. Were she and Mark lovers in a previous life? It sounded so intriguing, but I was disappointed after I read it.

I love reincarnation stories and yet this one wasn’t enough for me. The characters too easily accepted that they were lovers in a previous life. No disbelief or denial from the characters, Mark instantly recommends they try Past Life Therapy. For me, that took away a whole section of complex character development. I wanted the questioning and the doubts that a reincarnation story should have!

I also thoroughly enjoy love stories, and yet this one wasn’t enough for me in this aspect either. The man is strong, her hero, and takes charge (including ordering her food at a restaurant, gag me). The woman, is afraid to love because she could lose him, just like she loses everyone close to her. She could have been this amazing character with a lot of development, but alas, she wasn’t either. Both characters were too predictable, I craved some complexity!

Lastly, I love historical fiction and I was so excited for the moments back in time, to the Civil War era and the Chicago Fire, and yet, that left me disappointed as well. It seemed as if the author could have easily made this a longer book and spent more time in the past!

I wanted more of everything. More of the historical fiction, more of the reincarnation, and more character development in their love story. It was an easy read and although it sounds like I’m complaining, it wasn’t a bad book. I would rate it a 2 out of 4 stars. I just thought it had such great potential; it could have been an amazing book and instead everything was rather predictable.

If you’re looking for an easy read, and enjoy the typical love story where heroic guy will do anything to be with girl who is afraid to love, then you will enjoy this story. I was eager for a book that made me question reincarnation, a book that left me with a desire to learn more about history, and a book that made me care about whether the characters could be together and this was not it.

Very interesting comments on this book. Sorry you didn't enjoy it more. I am a fan of historical fiction and find it frustrating when it turns out not to be historical at all! UGH. Thanks for your review.

Thanks for the review. I love a good complex story, but it has to be fleshed out correctly or it kinda falls flat like a souffle from I Love Lucy. Starts of with so much potential but just fizzles out in the end.
