This book is exactly as the title describes, a physician's take on healthy living, medications, medical myths and advertising in the health and wellness sector. From advice about nutrition to how to recognise false advertising and how some salespeople pull the wool over your eyes to make a quick buck, this book has got it all. It's very clear that Dr. Tavel cares about his patients and readers more than sponsors or about angering celebrity doctors.
I gave TIPS, MYTHS, AND RIPS: A Physician's Advice 3 out of 4 stars. It's well written, very informative and will help anyone gain a better understanding of how to achieve better health. I found the section about TV doctors and ads for miracle cures or medications in newspapers and magazines particularly helpful since I love those kinds of shows and have often gone, wow, is that really true?
The only issue I had with TIPS, MYTHS, AND RIPS: A physician's Advice was that in some cases more recent research has changed some of the advice that medical professionals now give compared to the advice in the book. This is the only reason that I gave it 3 out of 4 stars and not 4 out of 4. It's no reflection on the way it's written, just simply a result of time having passed since it was written and published in 2015.
There are not many instances of this, however, since not too much has changed, but one instance I took note of is where Dr. Tavel states that fruit juice can be used as a completely healthy way to get in your five a day. While a glass of fruit juice can be a healthy part of your diet and used as one serving of fruits and vegetables, commercially produced fruit juice often has added sugar that you need to watch out for. It's now recommended to keep your sugar intake lower.
This isn't a major problem because in the cases where research was still ongoing at the time or where it seemed plausible that future research may take place and yield different results, Dr. Tavel does mention that (aside from the fruit juice). So at all times, his only aim is to inform us and to make sure that we are able to make healthy choices for ourselves and our families. In addition to that, he gives us the tools we need to make sure that we don't spend our money on useless products or buy products that do more harm than good.
I definitely recommend TIPS, MYTHS, AND RIPS: A Physician's Advice to everyone. If you use the advice given in this book, you will lead a healthier life and it will be much harder for salespeople and advertisements to get the better of you.
