[<i>]The Church of Tango</i>] by Cherie Magnus, part of her Death, Dance, Destiny trilogy, points out that beauty and sex appeal come from within. The author repeatedly points out the importance of doing things today, because tomorrow may be too late. The book opens with Cherie, a city librarian who has lost her husband the previous year, arriving in Paris to take a two-week French class. She says her favorite thing in the world is music. She falls instantly in love with Nathan, one of her college professors, who is married to another woman.

Cherie loves France, but she must return to her job in Los Angeles. The newfound freedom she found in Paris causes her to try new things, like going to the Rhinestones 'n' Rawhide Club.


After her husband's death, she was informed that the estate owed a huge debt. This causes her to make enormous life changes. She decides to move to France. After starting to pack, she discovers that she has a major health challenge, and she is given only a 24% chance of living. She says these changes made her "extravagant, mpeteous, and spontaneous."

After more overseas adventures, she decides to become an expat, with only her cat, Phoebe.

My husband of 36 years died of Alzheimer's, and I related to the author's thinking about her mother. I almost cried when she had to cut her Paris trip short, and I felt her frustrations with her sons.

I liked the things that she calls her best Christmas gifts. I went through a similar situation, and it is the little things that matter.

This book did not capture my attention. The same scenario was repeated at least three different times in a lttle different setting. Therefore, the book seemed very repetitive.

I found numerous grammar mistakes in the first few pages. Then, it got much better. There is limited French and Spanish in this book. I am not proficient in either language, so I cannot tell you if these sections are correct.

I rate this book a 2 out of 5, because of its predictability. lack of character development, and lack of action. While there are sex scenes in this book, much is left to the reader's imagination. I did not find any profanity. I recommend this book to readers who love reading personal stories.

It would appear that the book would be packed with action and lots of excitement from reading the summary. However, the fact that character development is lacking and that is largely predictable somehow affects the reading experience, but I hope that the nice plot will still enthrall readers.
