Toni the Superhero by R.D. Base is a children’s picture book aimed at children first learning how to read. This book tells the story of Toni, a superhero, who is also a kid who likes to do a lot of normal stuff with his family and friends. This book has colorful artwork and short, simple sentences that make for a great book for children first learning how to read. The pictures are enjoyable to look at and the book is a fun read for kids.

As mentioned, the artwork for Toni the Superhero is very colorful. The illustrator, Debbie Hefke, chose to primarily use bright, primary colors for her illustrations. Each page has a simple background with a scene featuring our main character, Toni. I find that the simple backgrounds make the different scenes really stand out. I notice a lot of details, like the character’s expressions, much more easily because I’m not distracted by the background. From rescuing animals to sweeping the floor, Toni does it all. Readers will be able to relate to a lot of his activities. The pictures on each of the pages match the sentences that are written, giving beginner readers context to the words that they are learning. None of the words used in the book are very difficult or uncommon. The sentences all use the same general structure so that early readers will have only one or two new words to learn per page.

Overall, this is an excellent book for early readers. The bright artwork and the easy sentences are perfect for their target audience of beginner readers. I would not recommend this book for children that have a solid grasp on reading because this book would be too easy for them. I rate this book five out of five stars. There isn’t anything in the book that would merit taking a star away from the rating.
