Kalliope Barlis's Play Golf Better Faster: The Classic Guide to Optimizing Your Performance and Building Your Best Fast is a complete manual for golfers who wish to improve their game psychologically as well as physically. It targets all players, regardless of whether they are novices or veterans, by presenting practical tips that can help golfers get good results faster.

Barlis uses her NLP background and knowledge in golf instruction to accentuate the mental aspects of the game. The author introduces readers to the idea of developing a golfer’s brain by proposing mental exercises that build focus and self-assurance. A unique aspect of this book is how it teaches one to mentally prepare through visualization techniques and maintaining a positive attitude when faced with psychological challenges. It introduces the concept of “anchoring,” which helps players associate successful experiences with specific actions so that they can continue experiencing such success.

The book has three distinct sections: “Using Your Brain,” “Practicing Your Game,” and “Playing Your Game,” each dealing with critical areas of improving golf skills. Efficient practice routines, consistency, and establishing solid routines are highly stressed by Barlis because these are good practices among those players whose attention wanders while training. The author emphasizes on deliberate practice rather than repetitive, mindless practicing. Moreover, there are illustrations within the text that make it easier for readers to understand what is being said.

Another important part worth mentioning is the practical advice on bouncing back from disappointments experienced in golf games. In this chapter, Barlis shows some strategies on how one can quickly recover from a bad shot or swing, even if they made an extremely bad score that has really affected their performance, along with maintaining a positive attitude towards the forthcoming round, game, match, or competition. Furthermore, there are parts about goal setting where the author introduces the “Wheel of Golf” as an instrument for defining reachable goals.

Apart from mental tactics, Barlis also tackles the physical aspects of golf. She puts more emphasis on fitted golf clubs as well as the right instructor to guide golfers because they have a great impact on their performance. There are different exercises and drills in the chapters, such as All Shots and Step by Step, among others, that are meant to equip readers with hands-on knowledge for refining particular skills. In addition, it touches on lifestyle choices by reminding individuals about youthfulness even in old age and having fun while practicing or playing.

Barlis integrates psychological and fitness exercises that help create an all-round golfer. The author’s technical skills are credible because of her background and education, her writing makes it interesting. I rate this book a five out of five. It is a priceless resource for any golfer who wants to improve in the shortest time possible; it offers advice on mental training and practical exercises that can increase enjoyment and performance.
