Review of The Legacy of Job's Wife
The Legacy of Job's Wife is a religious and romance book by Cynthia Koelker that describes the life story of Job an Ix'ises from the latter's point of view. Their story begins from the moment Ix'ises pops out of her mother womb and Job mesmerised by her beautiful eyes proposes the name to be given to the newborn. The two families are neighbours so the two children grow up together. Job is always by her side waiting patiently for when the time comes to be able to make her his wife.
Ix'ises has an inquiring mind and she constantly questions Job's God and the reason behind every action they make in the name of God, for example animal sacrifices. When the time comes, the two of them get married and they create a beautiful family with ten children. When they are at their peak both financially and as far as their family is concerned, calamity strikes and all their children die. Ix'ises once again questions God as she tries to find a reason why He would be so cruel and take all her innocent children. As the time goes by and they try to heal their wounds, they manage to have more children, not to substitute the ones they lost, as she constantly mentions, but because this is what she needs in order to have a purpose and something to wake up every day.
This couple shares a deep bond and we see how it develops over the years. They have their ups and their downs and yet they manage to overcome the obstacles with deep understanding and love developed during their formative years. This book is a roller coaster of feelings enhanced by the vivid descriptions. One minute you feel happiness and you live the family bliss and the next moment you feel sad and you sympathize with the characters. The readers are transported to this era and they become part of the story. I found very interesting how her faith in God is often questioned and she tries to find answers through lengthy conversations with Job. It is a deeply religious book and we get the positive aspects of believing which are inner peace and turning to God in difficult situations in order to finally get what the believer looks for.
There wasn't anything I didn't like about the book. It was exceptionally edited as I didn't find any mistakes in it. On the contrary, I found it an interesting read and a real page turner.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars as it is a book with so many messages and when finishing it, the reader has a lot to think about. I would recommend it for adolescents and adults as there are some more sensitive scenes with sacrifices and giving birth, that are not proper for younger children. In addition, as it has explicit references on religion, I would recommend it for people who are interested in reading books with such content.
