Review by Love_Good_Books -- The Legacy of Job's Wife
[Following is a volunteer review of "The Legacy of Job's Wife" by Cynthia Koelker.]
The Legacy of Job's Wife by Cynthia J. Koelker was published by MD Books USA in 2018. This book imagines the life of the wife of the Biblical Job, from birth to near death. Koelker's writing style makes this an easy read, even while probing profound ideas. No foul language was used. This book appears to have been professionally edited; I found only one error in all 304 pages.
I enjoyed the story for many reasons. It is well-researched and rich in detail, allowing the reader to imagine being in attendance as the events unfold. The main characters and many of the minor characters are developed masterfully. Koelker directly addresses topics such as the basis for faith, trust in a Creator and in those we love, injustice, and of course endurance of suffering. She has crafted a superlative tale that agrees wonderfully and refreshingly with the Biblical account. Koelker's treatment of the life of Job's wife is at once strengthening, encouraging, and thoughtful. I deeply appreciate the emotional and spiritual edification Dr. Koelker offers in this novel.
There was nothing I disliked about this book because this is one of those rare tomes which inspires without disappointing. Some readers may wish to know beforehand that there are a couple of instances in which physical intimacy is frankly described. The participants are married, and the narrative is not crude. Neither are the occurrences gratuitous; they are essential to the story.
Cynthia Koelker is a medical doctor who has earned degrees from MIT, Case Western Reserve University, and the University of Akron. This was the first time I have read her writing, but she has also written 101 Ways to Save Money on Health Care and Armageddon Medicine: How to Be Your Own Doctor in 2012 and Beyond. I look forward to reading those books and any more Dr. Koelker may write. I would love to see her address other Biblical characters about whom little is known, such as Rahab, Barnabas, Timothy, or Dorcas.
Those who are facing or who have already faced serious problems in life will benefit the most from this book. Koelker's approach is one that will not be offensive to most agnostics or atheists. Naturally, if the reader is already familiar with the Biblical book of Job, the story will be immediately more meaningful. However, those who have never read Job can still appreciate The Legacy of Job's Wife. I rate this book four out of four stars and highly recommend it. Reading this work at this point in my life meant a great deal to me.
