Deadly Waters: The Vietnam Naval War and Its Aftermath, is a historical fiction novel by Randy Miller that delves into real events that took place during the Vietnam War. The inclusion of themes such as love and devotion adds depth and complexity to the story, making it a poignant and emotionally charged read.

In the book, the author portrays the protagonist, Zack, and his fellow soldiers as individuals who bear deep emotional scars long after the Vietnam War has ended. Despite their struggles being linked to Agent Orange, the government denies any connection. The novel provides readers with an insight into the harsh realities of war and the toll it takes on soldiers and their families. It highlights the challenges that veterans face when seeking proper medical care and compensation for war-related injuries. Throughout the story, Zack's journey is one of selflessness, duty, and dedication to his country and loved ones. The author depicts him as a courageous and honourable man who risks his life for his fellow sailors and his nation, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to overcoming obstacles encountered during and after the war.

The author's world-building abilities are noteworthy as the characters are vividly portrayed, imbuing the story with authentic emotions that elicit feelings of empathy and patriotism in the reader. The sense of abandonment that Zack experiences by the country he pledged to serve deeply resonates with readers. While a work of fiction, the book offers valuable insights into naval and ship operations. The novel skillfully explores themes such as friendship, bravery, vengeance, and loyalty, connecting them to the lives of veterans during and after the war, while also shedding light on the difficulties they face trying to reintegrate into civilian life.

There is nothing I disliked about this book. Furthermore, the incorporation of themes such as love and devotion adds depth to the plot, while the precise historical facts in the book create a captivating combination that engages readers and broadens their comprehension of war and its effects on those who experience it.

I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The author, Randy Miller, does an exceptional job of portraying the brutal realities of war, as well as the struggles that veterans face in obtaining proper medical treatment and compensation for their injuries. The book was well-edited and exceptionally written. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in military history, naval warfare, or war stories.

There was so much to read in this book. Zack's story was interesting as he went through life as a Navy officer. However, I was incensed by the government's refusal to help him and other veterans who were affected by the Agent Orange.
