Review of Deceit
Vernon Baumrind's true story "Deceit" is a heartbreaking and captivating journey that he endured in his marriage and struggle to maintain custody of his children. He delves deeply into:
*Betrayal
*Mental and physical abuse
*Sexual exploitation
*Manipulation
*Narcissism
*Surveillance techniques
*The legal system
*Neglect
*Mistrust
Baumrind is a mild mannered gentleman whose love of family is clearly evident and admirable. He spared no expense in trying to reconcile his failing marriage and to keep his children safe from any harm and in his custody. It was heart wrenching to read how he tried to keep "hope alive" despite his wife's infidelity. At some point he came to the realization that no matter what he did to win back his wife's affection, she was was out of love with him and completely engrossed with her lover and the new adventures he presented.
It was quite impressive how he was able to maintain his composure during the waiting period before he was able to present evidence of what was happening to the marriage and the family structure. The fear of losing his children had a vice-like grip on him that afforded him the strength to persevere until he could compile enough evidence to prove the illicit affair happening before his eyes and in his household. His ability to remain steadfast and not inflict any harm to both parties when in the presence of each other was amazing including him being able to withhold the fact that he was totally aware and had proof of the affair. It's also important to note that his wife's lover was a well respected doctor in the community that many women trusted and relied upon for medical purposes.
With the proper legal guidance and sufficient proof of evidence, Baumrind proceeds to accomplish his determination to seek full custody of his children through proper legal and professional guidance; thus the battle begins.
I would give this book a four (4) rating. The story was well written, easy to read and well detailed. The timeline of events and evidence was well documented and sufficient evidence was provided to support his case against his wife and her lover. The details of the evidence he presented was a bit lengthy although clearly
detailed. The means by which Baumrind used to garner evidence of the affair was controversial in the eyes of the law and public opinion - the outcome weighs on the matter of opinion...he told his story despite the odds and fiercely protected his children in the process.
I found no typos or grammatical errors. Profanity was basically little to none and sexual content was contained, not offensive nor graphic.
Baumrind's story is a true testament of faith, dedication, commitment and love of family despite the odds!
