Revised:

Surviving the Business of Healthcare, authored by Barbara Galutia Regis PA-C, is a comprehensive guide that offers a conclusive perspective based on her familial, professional, and personal experiences as a fourth-generation family practice provider and a cancer patient. In concise and straightforward chapters, Regis provides invaluable insights on various topics, including the importance of being informed and advocating for oneself, healthcare insurance options, the roles of different healthcare providers, and navigating hospital admissions. Additionally, Regis documents her journey, diagnosis, and treatment as a cancer patient with a rare form called amelanotic nodular melanoma.

Within this comprehensive handbook, Regis imparts a wealth of information. Growing up in a household where the front hallway served as the waiting area for her father's family practice, she offers readers a unique glimpse into the transformative changes in healthcare over recent generations. Regis explains her role as a "cradle-to-grave practitioner" and emphasizes the significance of choosing the right primary care physician. She provides practical advice to readers, such as "If you feel rushed and unheard, find another doctor." Regis describes her motivation for writing the book: "to provide information that will empower you to make better healthcare decisions for you and your family."

Healthcare is an immensely relevant concern, and I gained a great deal of knowledge from this concise guide. Admittedly, it is not a book I would typically select while browsing in a bookstore, but fortunately, I stumbled upon a rare gem: a book that is as engaging to read as it is informative. I particularly enjoyed the sections that Regis titled "A Glimpse into our not-so-lazy town." In these sections, she shares anecdotes about growing up in her childhood home, which also served as one of two doctors' offices in the area. Regis' reminiscences made me yearn for simpler times when doctors made house calls and sometimes bartered for their fees. I also appreciated her inclusion of money-saving tips related to cost-comparison shopping. In one example, she compared the inflated cost of an over-the-counter medication that her mother purchased from a well-known pharmacy with the price of the same medication on Amazon; the difference was staggering.

There is truly nothing to dislike or any enhancements I can suggest for this informative guide. Regis' firsthand experiences as a family practitioner and cancer patient, combined with her nostalgic stories, qualify her to provide readers with a holistic understanding. Furthermore, the book is devoid of profanity and impeccably edited; I did not note a single error.

Therefore, I'd rate it 5 out of 5 stars. Given the wealth of information the book offers, I cannot think of anyone who wouldn't learn something from it. I recommend it to readers who are eager to learn about advocating for optimal healthcare for themselves and their loved ones while saving money in the process. Regis' story will also resonate with cancer patients.

I greatly value well-being and good health, I always try to share easy-to-follow tips to stay healthy and I avoid self-medication at all costs, because it can be dangerous. This book seems to have valuable content.
