By the year 2034, eighty percent of all countries were governed by females. Only a few years later, men had lost not only the right to vote but also the right to assemble. The only police force in the country was run exclusively by women.
THE PRISON OF POWER by G. Michael Smith gives us a glimpse into what the world just might look like with women in every leadership position and men relegated to positions of uneducated physical labor. As one can imagine, not everyone agrees with the status quo, and groups develop on all sides of the debate. Some advocate for reinstating some of the men’s rights and opportunities, while others are in favor of eradicating men altogether.
This is a well-crafted book with a very interesting, thoughtful premise. As society as a whole works toward systems that value and support women and men equally, it is easy to see how the events described in this book could happen if the scales are tipped too far in the opposite direction. The world led by women depicted by Smith is not the utopia some would imagine it to be. The struggles for power and wealth are not exclusive to men alone, and the women in this book are not immune either.
I enjoyed the book quite a bit, as it required examination of the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of a society built by and for women. There were many moments of intense action and suspense that made the story enjoyable as well. For me, personally, the extreme use of foul language by some characters in the book was off-putting as well as the often blunt, matter-of-fact descriptions of violence and sexual fantasies or encounters.
Overall, as I said, I really did enjoy reading this book and would give it 4 out of 5 stars. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone interested in its subject matter.
