Owen Cloud, also known as Red of West Flamingo Beach, relocates to Sip Lake to work as an orderly. He lives alone on Taylor Island. Owen has confidence issues and is adjusting to his new work life. Chris, Marianne, and others help him escape his shell. He and his childhood friend Harry spend time together fishing and discussing Harry's troubled marriage.

Sip Lake is a 215-page nonfiction novel by Joseph Basara. It follows Owen Cloud, the main character. The book is slow-paced and atmospheric, with a focus on character development. Urban contemporary writing is the author's style. While some of the individuals in this book are fleeting, others keep readers riveted to Owen's fascinating career and social life. Basara provides detailed information about the characters and the town's architecture, inhabitants, and enterprises. It helps readers understand the setting and appreciate the story better.

I liked many things about the book, to mention a few. Marianne's character was likable. She adored her children, even when she yelled at Sammy for wearing church clothes. I appreciated that Marianne is making so much effort to get to know Owen better. She invites him to church for dinner, where he meets her family. I also enjoyed Harry's persona. He added some flavor to the story with his behavior and disappearing act.

The author's portrayal of Owens as a weakling with low self-esteem is unconvincing. His self-deprecating thoughts and desire to be a writer while eating junk food make him seem dull. This characterization makes it difficult to see him as a potential partner for the wish girl. In addition, the large cast of characters in the book, was hard to keep track of, I didn't appreciate it; keeping the characters short would have been nice.

I enjoyed reading Sip Lake. It was captivating and entertaining. I would it 3 out of 4 stars
stars because of minor capitalization errors and too many characters like I mentioned above. I recommend this book to romance lovers and young adult men trying to find love and navigate life. The book is good above average I will rate it 4 out of 5 stars.
