Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Galen Bray is a new immigrant in Voulhire. After his great uncle dies, he travels from the Lands of the Princes to Voulhire in hope for a better life. In contrast to the poverty and chaos in Lands of the Princes, Voulhire look like a promised land. However, other characters in the book reveal a much more complex situation in Voulhire than Galen could have imagined. For a start, Wilhelm, the King of Voulhire has a lot on his plate. The king has to restore peace at Hillport, one of the cities of Voulhire, after the scandals brought by its two last lords; Lord Orlin and Lord Meldorath. The king then appoints Eldus Alderman, an honest former judge, to become the new lord of Hillport. The new lord and his family quickly understand that the new job does not only come with a lot of responsibilities; it also comes with a lot of danger. The king also has to handle the political situations in his kingdom, such as a group of rebels that call themselves the Riva Rohavi. Then, there is a problem with the next king of Voulhire. In addition to that, there is a mystery related to another newcomer in Voulhire named Beth, a magical being from Caromentis. Her arrival is yet unknown by the king, but may pose a new threat to his kingdom. This is due to her association with the king’s enemy.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book of the Voulhire series. It is a science fiction/political thriller/psychology book that combines the material world with the magical one. I gained the idea of the book to be intriguing because of its unique premise. I appreciate the fact that some of the characters in the book are interesting and quite well-developed. I am especially fond of Lord Eldus and his wife, Charlotte. Lord Eldus has a deep sense of justice. He and his wife managed to bring back hope to the people of Hillport by giving not only promises, but also concrete actions. I also enjoy how some of the lines and conversations in the books are deep and thought-provoking. My favourite is when Galen recalls his grandmother’s wisdom word. I also like Captain Barcaedi’s brave explanation to Lord Eldus about how he views Lord Meldorath. Some of the scenes in the book are also exciting and make me want to continue reading the story, especially the part where Galen first encounters Demetrius, the mysterious monk.
Having said that, it appears that in more than fifty percent of the story, the author is merely trying to lay the foundation for the “real story.” I believe this is the reason why the story seems to be going slow. It is only by the end of the book that the story is taking a more fast pace which makes the cliff-hangers seem to be rather forced. Also, some of the language and references that the author is using look as if to be mediaeval whereas others appear to be more modern.
Regardless, I think the story itself is quite interesting. It has a few minor grammar mistakes that make me believe it deserves 4 out of 5 stars.
I find the imagination of the author to be remarkably good as he is able to create a whole new fantasy world. Thus, I believe the story is interesting for people who love science fiction and political thrillers genre and I would recommend this story to them. Because of some crude humour and violence (including sexual violence) in the book, I would recommend this book to the mature audiences of the said genre.
