The book “We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies” by Matthew Tysz is a medieval high fantasy novel that follows a young man named Galen Bray. He escaped from his war-torn homeland and found refuge in the kingdom of Voulhire. There he needs to adjust to his new life with the help of a man named Rowan, who was hired by Galens recently deceased uncle.
A lot of the chapters also follow different characters, like the king of Voulhire, a new lord of a rural town with a dark past, a group of anarchists hellbent on bringing the kingdom to its knees, and an evil mage, who was banished from Voulhire.

The author stated in his description of the book that it shouldn’t be viewed as a complete story, but rather a 300 page prologue that sets up the story that will occur in the later books. This is shown through many separate plots that have seemingly no correlation to each other. A common problem that a lot of similar books face is that the leading character gets completely overshadowed by others and their stories become a drag to read through. Luckily this book doesn’t have that problem and I found myself enjoying every character, since all of them were distinctly different from one another while still managing to be interesting.

Another thing this book does well is dialogue. It is fluid and feels natural. In no part of the story did I think that a reaction from one of the characters was forced or disconnected from the events. I also enjoyed the characters a lot, with Galen being my favourite.
The last thing I want to mention in this section is that the book was exceptionally well edited. I didn’t find a single grammatical error.

So, now I come to the negative part of my review and honestly? I don’t have a lot to say here. The biggest problem that I had was the fact that despite Galen being the main character, he is present in less then half of the chapters, but that will probably be fixed in future books. You need to remember that the author designed this book to be a prologue. Granted, a very long prologue.
The word prologue is a good segue, because the actual prologue for this book wasn’t that enjoyable. Not the actual content, but how it was written. The sentences felt disconnected, because there weren’t a lot of conjunctions. This never happens in the rest of the book, so it could be a writing style, but reading those 15 pages didn’t feel good.

I give “We are Voulhire: A new Arrival under Great Skies” three out of four stars. It’s really good, but it isn’t perfect and more for people who enjoy reading and aren’t afraid to invest a lot of time into a well written book. People who simply want to enjoy a quick and complete story probably shouldn’t read it. Still, I definitely recommend this book and will read the sequels.
