Review of A Bloody Book
The bloody hand by Chris Brown is a story of a young troubled kid named Max. It tells the story of how his teacher challenges him to re-evaluate his life. This book is written as the assignment Max was given by his teacher evaluating when he stopped caring. The assignment asked the kids to write when they stopped caring about school and what happened to cause that. This book is Max’s story and his life experiences and when he stopped caring and why.
Max’s story is intriguing and very relatable to young adults in difficult situations. For example, chapter 8 was exceptional. I felt the emotions he felt, uncertainty, fear. This chapter flowed nicely, it was clear and concise. It brought you into Max’s home life and how he was raised and depended on. The flashes to his past were great and very well done. The last chapter had an amazing twist and finish to the book relating back to the beginning and the reason for this book.
As much as I loved the theme of this story there was to many mistakes for me to recommend this book to anyone. The writing was choppy and juvenile at times. I had a hard time believing a teacher of twenty years wrote this book. There were so many spellings and grammar mistakes I wouldn’t want to recommend this book to a young reader. At times the story was hard to keep up with because the writer would go on rants of random things that I didn’t feel the story even needed. In my opinion I felt there wasn’t a clear storyline. I felt this story needed more structure and flow and really needed a life lesson or point to the story. The story just ended with more ranting which made me feel the story needed more.
I would rate The bloody hand one out of four stars. I feel this book has a lot of potential of being a great book for young adult readers but needs a lot of work. The story didn’t seem to have a challenge or even a storyline to follow in my opinion. The writing was choppy and hard to follow at times. I feel a story for young adults should be easier to follow. There were over twenty mistakes I found threw out the book and that is unacceptable for a book for young readers. These are some of the reasons for my rating.
I believe this book would have been an amazing book for young adults in high school. The story relates well to young readers and is very relatable to someone in a difficult time . When Max evaluates his life, it encourages the reader to also evaluate their own life and life choices. I believe this book could have been a staple in high school reading programs if it was fixed and had more content.
