Set in the mountainous regions of Southwest Virginia, Beyond the Higher Ground by Thomas A. Brigger is a story that revolves around the life of Tucker Mason who is in charge of the construction of a prison in Bright’s Mountain, and finds himself encapsulated in the world of drug dealers. Mason moves into a rickety, old house previously owned by the Newleys who were brutally murdered there. Soon after, Mason starts receiving threats and warning signs to vacate the house.

He manages to befriend his unwelcoming neighbors to obtain more information on the mysterious events surrounding his house on Mills Hollow Road. This assists him to find out the culprit behind the puzzling goings-on at his residence. Mason ends up coming face to face with the drug dealers, being taken temporarily hostage, and experiencing a few near-death situations.

As the story unfolds, Thomas A. Brigger has been able to clearly instill a sense of awareness for mental health by amicably including flashbacks of Mason’s past. Mason experiences the loss of family members after the recent death of his beloved wife. We get a glimpse of how trauma can naturally affect a person’s mental health in the form of anxiety and panic attacks.

What I tremendously enjoyed about this book is that it gets quite captivating as the story unfolds, and it exceptionally details the thoughts and feelings a person may go through as the unavoidable circumstances of life unfold. In addition, it provides an insight into how drug addiction can deteriorate a person’s mental and physical health at any age as well as affect relationships with loved ones.

The downside of the book is the extensive use of metaphors and detailed descriptions of almost every object and character. This occurs frequently at the beginning of the book, therefore, making it quite boring and difficult to keep up with. As the story unfolds, the metaphors and unnecessary descriptions reduce thus resulting in quite an enjoyable read.

The book does not seem to be entirely professionally edited. There are numerous run-on sentences and several punctuation errors which may tend to cause one to keep going back to remind oneself what exactly has been happening. Therefore, I provide it with a rating of three out of four stars.

Beyond the Higher Ground is suitable for an audience who typically enjoys reading mystery novels. In addition, people who have been through the loss of family members may find they relate substantially well with the leading character, Tucker Mason.
