Bar maid by Daniel Roberts is a story set in the 20th century that tells about a boy named Charlie Green who is an 18 year old overthinker. Although fickle-minded, he is good at heart. He tends to depend upon the advices given by his brother and believes himself as not normal due to his intense overthinking capabilities. A little insecure about his life and unsure about his future, he sets his foot in his college life in Philadelphia. Circumstances led him to a girl named Paula Henderson who works as a maid in The Sansom Street Oyster House and he found himself falling for her. Since Paula happens to make a place in Charlie's heart, he takes some major decisions of his life in order to chase the path destined towards Paula which majorly includes dropping out of college. But owing to his confused and indecisive mind, he almost lost the chance to his happily ever after with Paula. Now what will happen in Charlie's life? Will he be able to win Paula back?

Daniel beautifully presented the array of emotions dealt by a young boy who don't know how his life is going to be like and is very much new to the brewing demons of the outer world. I loved how Daniel showed the excitement, nervousness, fear, sadness, confusions and the hardships faced by Charlie. Some may think that Charlie used every female involved in his life or he doesn't have true feelings for any of them while others may find his actions justifiable. I liked how this debatable topic piqued my interest and intrigued me.

I really can't say that I liked the character of Charlie Green or agreed with his choices, but i could definitely relate to his actions. I was able to understand what and why he said and did things in several events. I was able to feel what the author was trying to convey through his writing which was certainly the most important aspect of a book.

Sometimes in this story, I felt the situations were unnecessarily exaggerated and stretched which may turn the story a little boring. The recount of nostalgic events were way too much which may divert the attention of readers from ongoing situation of the story.

I would like to give Bar maid the rating of three out of four stars. I am impressed with the writing style of the author since it involves the careful selection of words and phrases. I would have given it four stars if not for the abruptly changing conversations and some miniscule errors.

I would recommend this book to the young readers since it can emotionally and intellectually relate to their lives and they can surely benefit from different opinions presented in various situations in it. It would help people know that some things in life can't be pre-defined or predicted, they just happen.
