Review of Brutal Valour: The Tragedy of Isandlwana
History gives a view of what happened in the past. It enabled those living in the present days to know what happened and how things used to be in ancient times and maybe compare them with the present time. Brutal Valour: The Tragedy of Isandlwana it’s a historical book that pictures the war between the Zulus and the British colonies in South Africa.
James Mace the author of the book describes how the war started in December 1878. this was due to Henry Bartle who was the British high commissioner decided to demolish the Zulu kingdom which was led by King Cetshwayo. Sir Henry went ahead to recruit new privates to his existing army which included Arthur, and Richard among others. On the other hand, when Cetshwayo the king heard about the plans of their neighbors, who used to be their friends in the past years, he also prepared a large army of the Zulus for war. the British army had better equipment’s for warlike firearms compared to the Zulus who used spears and shields. The Zulus who came for the war outnumbered the British army and were able to conquer them only a few managed to escape. In addition, a large number of the Zulus were killed in the war, and thus instead of celebrating the victory they had to mourn their fallen soldiers.
The delightful part of this book is when the British army looks down upon the Zulus but later in the war, they are conquered. Am also in love with the courageous Zulu soldiers who are ready to die in war rather than allow the colonies to rule over them.
Brutal Valour: The Tragedy of Isandlwana is one of the novels with the best plot. There is the use of pictures of some leaders in the British army and some other group pictures both for the Zulus and the British army. Again there are also pictures of some landmarks like the Isandlwana hill, and maps of some places among others. James also uses letters in his work and also the local language which makes the plot to be eye-catching and creates the urge to keep reading.
I would recommend the lovers of history to read the book since it describes clearly the history of the war between the Zulus and the British living in South Africa. The book teaches people how to be loyal to their country and brave when it comes to protecting what belongs to them. Also, it shows us clearly that we should not despise anyone in any way since each person has a strong point.
Rating the book, I would give it four out of four stars since the novel records well each event and its day of occurrence making it easier for the reader to systematically follow the events.
