Let's Help You Self-Help!: An Inspirational, Passionate Handbook for YOUR Path is Anthony Jacob Braaten's debut book centered on healing oneself from mental health issues with inspiration drawn from his own lifelong experience with depression, PTSD and a psychotic episode. His trauma inspired him to help heal others through the tried and tested methods he focuses his handbook on.

His system to tackling one's mental health is through twelve skills that are interconnected to each other but do not necessarily follow a step-by-step plan as in most self-help books. Braaten's witty and humourous approach to each of the skills is inclusive of his own experiences and cheerful encouragement to try out the activities within the book itself. It doesn't follow a scientific basis and instead focuses on relatability to everyday occurrences in the life of a person undergoing mental illness. The handbook feels more like an eye-opening conversation with a friend because of the author's sincerity and almost infectiously upbeat attitude whilst he navigates sensitive topics.

The activity log's within the handbook make it more personalizable to the reader and taking a few moments to write answers to his rather straightforward questions was grounding on an emotional level.
Braaten has captured the essence of positive affirmations, mindfulness, gentle encouragement, and passionate curiosity in a lively, short read that is different and crucially important to the target audience - people who are undergoing a strain on their mentality - therefore, require a more nurturing and encouraging presence to guide them through it.

It's set apart from the books of its genre because of its blatant approach to the topics while remaining friendly, encouraging, and optimistic about life. The author does not dive deep into his personal experiences but rather sources them as examples and moves on to focus on the reader. A thought that struck me was that if the author who seems to have gone through more than his fair share of traumatic episodes has still retained his cheery personality, then it is a beacon of hope for those suffering currently that they too might one day see their struggles in a warmer light.

Let's Help You Self-Help! would be cherished by those who are in search of a logical yet lively read to help them through their emotional navigation. However, this handbook would not suffice for those interested to gain a more systematically proven understanding of mental health and trauma or for those who prefer formal presentation over the rather engaging format it is written in. It is a well-edited book that would stand out against the numerous self-help books out there because of the author's genuine approach which includes, recommendations for further reads, an array of helpful activities, and friendly reminders that recur throughout the book. Therefore, I rate this book four out of four stars with the hope that this handbook reaches the hands of those who need it most.
