A Dream for Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a detailed memoir about the life and experiences of the author. Dr. Berrah was born into a proud Muslim family in Aïn Beïda, northeastern Algeria, during the French colonial era. He was a bright and ambitious man who was zealous about freeing his country from the shackles of French colonialism. His political activism and patriotism were so great that he deliberated on taking a hiatus during his studies in the US to join his brothers in the fight for independence. His medical profession gave him the leverage to connect with influential people who were of assistance to him during trying times. It's an autobiography anchored on historical events and spiced up with romance. Flip through the pages to understand what I mean.

This non-fiction book was fast-paced. It centers on the author's educational background in Algeria and the US. It also involved his achievements in biological sciences, the important role he played in ensuring Algeria's independence, his role as the special adviser to the Ivorian president, and his services to Africa and humanity.

The accomplishments of the author were quite impressive to read. He embodied many admirable qualities. I marveled at how one person could have it all.

He acknowledges the religious principles of others, as he believes in the different devotions of the "common faith is in one unique God." This can be seen in his relationship with his Roman Catholic wife. I particularly enjoyed his journey to finding his true love. They held onto the love they had for each other despite all odds. I was always in awe of President Houphouët-Boigny's wisdom and magnanimity. It was fascinating to see two like-minded individuals working together to achieve one goal. The characters' names are pretty funny and difficult to pronounce, but it comes with that part of the country. The pictures bolster his points, and footnotes were provided for clarity and further research.

As much as the story was lengthy, it was still exciting and didactic. However, everyone would not appreciate reading a book with such a volume. I think some of the information provided was unnecessary. I did not concur with his idea that women should focus on educating children at home. The world has become a little more sophisticated for accommodating such a notion. This is the only aspect I may consider negative in the book.

I give a thumbs-up to everyone who put in the effort to make this book a reality. The book was professionally edited, as I found one error. There is so much enlightenment in the book. As a result, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. It elaborated on the history of Algerians, how they gained their independence, and their life afterward. It would make an excellent read for people interested in knowing the details of what transpired during those times. Lovers of history, especially African history, will also appreciate the elaborate details.
