Review of Randy the Irresistible
The novel, Randy the Irresistible by S M Goodlier is a fictional British comedy that follows the story of Randy Love. Randy is a selfish character who uses various tactics to get out of many problematic situations. He loves women and with his charm and good looks, many fall for him. He is also an intelligent salesman which earns him a lot of admiration in his work place.
The novel begins when Randy drops out of college and begins earning a living. Randy's father believes that he should complete his education, but Randy is eager to prove him wrong. His charm lands him part time jobs and within a short time he decides to get a full time job. He takes chance to earn more money including wining bets. He also lands into trouble with his landlord and decides to play a prank on him. While working he gets an opportunity to work in a reputable bank in London after passing his financial advisory exam. He moves to London and Randy is out partying with friends. However he faces a lot of challenges including high living expenses. He gets into trouble with his landlords and he later decides to move in his brother's employee Nicky. He doesn't like his stay with her however, the woman loves him dearly. It takes a while for Randy to realize what kind of people are worth his time and with the help of his brother James, he is able to make wiser decisions.
What I like about the novel is the character Michael Goddard. Although he is intimidating he is also wise and in his argument with Randy he stresses that the amount of time spent in University is not enough to equip students with the skills in their career fields. It is important to read widely. This is a challenge I have taken upon myself to be better in future. Reading the book feels like watching my favorite sitcom. It is hilarious and full of British humor. I also like the good relationship that Randy has with his father John, despite many of his short falls.
What I don’t like about the book is the many minor characters which makes it difficult to follow through the novel at various instances. I would think that having the book as a sitcom would be much more interesting.
I give this book 3 out of 4 stars because it has been edited properly. I could find a few errors. It is also very relatable especially among the youth because the experiences that Randy faces is similar to what many young people face today.
I would recommend this book to readers who love British humor, however it may not be appropriate for younger readers because it contains sexual content.
