Review of Twisted But True
Twisted But True is a true crime novel that takes you on a riveting journey through some gripping tales of a retired police sergeant named Darren Burch. Each chapter is a real-life account of a true-crime story that he was faced with. They range from arresting drunk individuals, to high-speed chases, investigating sex crimes, and catching murderers. Each story is told in a humorous, but serious way as Darren Burch recounts and describes what took place during his 30 years in law enforcement. This true crime novel is unique because it doesn't just narrate the different adventures being a sergeant in Phoenix takes you on, but it also describes some of Darren Burch's personal life.
I usually do not like reading true crime novels because, in my opinion, I always tend to find something negative to say. Whether it's the lack of description or, the sheer boredom I feel when reading. So, you can imagine my shock when I was reading Twisted But True and I realized that it was one of the first true crime novels that I deeply enjoyed. So much so, that I have nothing negative to say about this novel. Darren Burch described and narrated each story in a humorous and entertaining way. I truly enjoyed the novel and was saddened when it came to an end. It was professionally edited, making it super easy to read.
There are several aspects of this novel that I loved. Firstly, I liked the fact that at the end of every chapter, there was an unanticipated twist to the story. It made the novel unpredictable and hilarious. I can't count the amount of times I found myself bursting out in laughter. I will admit, some stories were gruesome, and it really left me astonished at how the author found some way to be humorous and witty. Not only that, but I honestly couldn't put down the novel.
I would give Twisted But True a 4 out of 4 stars because of the author's skills in finding an amusing way to capture the readers' attention. Not only was it descriptive, providing the reader with a vivid picture of what was happening, it was also hilarious. I found myself dreading the end of the book because I did not want the humorous tales to end. It also revealed some personal stories, that left you contemplating. I loved the authenticity and that it wasn't all just laughs and giggles. Twisted But True gave me a little insight into what the people in law enforcement face, which made me respect them more for the work they do.
I would recommend Twisted But True to all those who truly enjoy true crime novels. Fair warning: there is some strong content, so to all those true crime lovers who can handle some grim tales, this book is for you.
