The Cold Serial: The Jack the Strangler Murders, a book written by Brian E. Forschner. So this book was a compilation of cases of crimes done by a serial killer nicknamed Jack the Stranger. These crimes happened in the time of 1900-1910 in Dayton, Ohio. There are 6 chapters, in the book each chapter basically telling the detailed explanation of how crime happened and what steps were taken after it. All the victims of this cases were females who were raped and murdered by strangulation. Those chapters were telling the story of Ada Lantz, Dona Gilman, Anna Markowitz, Mary Forschner, Lizzie Fulhart, and Bessie Stickford, the victims of this vicious crime.
What I felt throughout the reading was, I really didn't like the way the police department handled the cases. I understand, in that era we didn't have advanced medicinal equipment nor any technological stuff for security reasons but still I didn't like that all their investigation was influenced by news media and the general public and at one point they even forged a confession from a suspect just to gain reward money. This shows that they didn't have a single ounce of sympathy or sense of justice towards the victims. This book again has shown me how much racism was flowing through human hearts in the past about religion and skin color.
I would say book of this genre needs to be written proficiently, each of the things needs to be explained clearly without offending or altering the real story and on top of that writer need to keep in mind that there should be a spice of suspense and they need to show all of the emotions of victims, criminals and every other character and they need to create a same atmosphere and conditions happened back then in the book to make reader more interested and hooked to the book. And I must say I was able to see all of this in the book so that's a bonus point for Brian from me. He accomplished his goal of keeping this story of those victims in everyone's mind forever.
I will recommend this book to every person who loves thriller, criminal mystery and suspense and I would also like to add that there isn't a detailed or deep profanity or gore scene in it but just keep in mind that this book revolves around the rape, murder and a psychotic serial killer.
I am giving this book 4 out of 4 stars because there was actually nothing to dislike about the book. And I just wanted to add that books like this make you think how humans changed throughout the era and how much more needs to be changed, it's like an eye opener. Grammatically vise, the language of the book, the emotions description and additional photos and drawings everything made this book a good read.
