Review of Blockhead
Blockhead by Kyle J.S Bardell
Dystopia is among the most popular of subjects for science fiction books, so much so that many people find it overused or unoriginal. However, if you search hard enough, you can occasionally come across something rare, something exciting and enticing. (i)Blockhead(/i) is an excellent example of this. It takes the dystopian theme of a cold and dehumanized society, and subtly infuses it with the issues of today. It’s also an easy read, as the language is not so complicated as to distract from the narrative.
The Novel follows the story of teenaged Bronco, a naïve yet pragmatic girl who is introduced to us working on a seemingly mundane horse ranch. As she begins to investigate, she learns that there is more to the world around her than she had previously known. Fuelled by a burning desire for change and a duty that awaits her, Bronco’s adventure transports us from treacherous woods to bustling metropolis. Although, her voyage will not only take her to new heights, she will also ascertain valuable life lessons along the way...
I rate this book three out of four, and the only reason it is not four is due to the unfortunate fact that there are a few grammatical errors and structural issues. Otherwise, the plot is carefully planned, with no end of intriguing twists and turns and a careful use of character development, which allows readers to firmly connect with the characters. By the end of the book, you will feel as if you have watched the characters evolve and blossom. If there was one way to improve this book it would be to re-edit it, and maybe to reword a few sentences to ensure that the writing constantly flows and doesn’t appear stunted in places. These slight imperfections are miniscule details, though, and should be considered insubstantial when deciding whether or not to read (i)Blockhead(/i).
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the science fiction or fantasy genres, especially the more futuristic elements as this book is does not contain a huge number of magical or spiritual themes. If you are looking for a relatively short, easy-read novel that is engaging and intense, then this book is the perfect choice for you.
Overall, Kyle J.S Bardell has succeeded in constructing an elegant and suspenseful debut, which guarantees to leave you satisfied and exhilarated. It is one book you will definitely not regret taking the time to read.
