Review by Munguryek Keith -- Timewise by Robert Leet
Ron Larsen, swayed by the beauty of Regina Russo, is determined to do anything to be close to her, even pursue his academic career. Though at graduation, he decides that without any family or source of income to back him, he cannot continue to college. He then decides to pursue a career in gambling, more especially poker. With his love for mathematics, he is soon an ace in the game but finds out all too soon the repercussions of stripping a man in a gang of his wealth. A surprise meeting with Regina Russo later in his life realigns the railways of his life, and with the backing of the train that is Regina, he explores parts of the world and universe he could never have dreamt about.
Ever since I heard the words quantum physics being used in a sentence, I was fascinated. The idea of having knowledge of the very small things that constitute the world around us was alluring. In Timewise by Robert Leet, the strangest of these theories is turned into an entertaining and speculative science fiction novel. Set in the late 1970s moving up to the early 2000s, we follow the social and economic life of the main character Ron Larsen through the different events that defined that period.
From the terrorist attack on the world trade center right up to the economic recession, Robert Leet keeps the timeline in Timewise attuned to that of the real world throughout that period. This was one of the aspects that I liked about the novel. In the character Ron Larsen, we see a strikingly humane figure. He was one among many well-formed characters that the author has to be given credit for.
Though the aspect I liked most about the novel was the radical and new scientific theories being put into context. Albeit these theories are just science fiction and yet to be proved, I still found it a very intriguing read. The science could get a little mind-boggling at times, but the clear cut explanations offered by the characters made everything fairly easy to understand. I found absolutely nothing to dislike about this novel.
The superb character formation, well thought through timeline, and intriguing story all lead me to rate Timewise 4 out of 4. There were only a few mishaps in sentence construction in the novel. Overall, the book appeared to be professionally edited.
Though there was hardly any profane language, there was still a high prevalence of sexual content. Therefore, I would not recommend this book to younger readers, no matter how interested they are in quantum physics. One's religious beliefs are not attacked or offended in any way as the novel is purely science fiction with absolutely no religious references. Despite the simple explanations offered by the characters, it may still be difficult for some readers to comprehend the ideas being fronted in the novel. If your part of those who don't like to delve deep into science theory in a science fiction novel, I would not recommend this book to you.
However, if like me you enjoy plunging into the finer details of the science in science fiction. In theories that can only exist by turning them into science fiction in the first place. I would highly recommend this novel to you.
