The Senator's Suitcase, Mitch Engel's fourth novel, lucidly explores several contemporary themes, including those of societal pressure, psychological trauma, ethical dilemmas and political conflicts. The tale, switching between both rural and urban backdrops, revolves around Senator Beth Davenport, an esteemed statesperson with an unblemished reputation. Within a few pages of her introduction, the reader is sure to agree that the world needs an able leader like Beth Davenport.

However, the situation takes an unexpected turn after her death when her son, Troy Davenport, discovers a suitcase containing a stash of bills while sorting through her belongings. He begins having second thoughts about his mother's respectable persona. The gripping plot is split into three parts, where the first and last sections are narrated from Troy's perspective while the second one is from the eyes of Beth herself. I like how Engel gives us a peek into the minds of these pivotal characters, smoothly unveiling every shade of their personality. The narrative becomes more compelling with the flip of each page as Troy embarks on a journey to uncover the mysterious details of his mother's past.

The compelling storyline intertwined with the well-developed characters and subtle humour makes the novel a must-read. I admire how effortlessly Engel has unfolded the story over generations, dropping hints now and then to keep the reader intrigued throughout. I especially like how the theme of familial pressure due to a legacy has been portrayed. Troy watches history repeat itself as he is overshadowed by his mother's aura the same way his father was by Senior Davenport. Engel sheds light upon the gaping disparity between the personal and professional life of Senator Davenport and how the taint of a harrowing past deeply impacted her.

I would give this book a perfect 4 out of 4 stars. The writing and editing work of the entire novel is exceptionally flawless. The pace is maintained for the whole of the narrative, and the author's keen observation of nuances makes it all the more captivating.

There wasn't a single moment when I wasn't tempted to read further. If you are someone who enjoys suspense and enigma, The Senator's Suitcase is for you. I wouldn't recommend it to those who get triggered by a vivid display of emotions and eroticism. That said, I urge all readers to read this magnificent work of art as it addresses issues extremely significant to the modern world we live in.

Quite a gripping plot. I like to read books narrated from the perspective of pivotal characters. They tell us more about the feelings of the characters and also do a great job at building suspense.
Besides, it was a compelling review!
