Review by Pureader -- Lost Secret of the Ancient Ones
Lost Secret Of the Ancient Ones by Chris Reynolds is an exciting read. I was apprehensive of the book's length at first, but found myself tearing through it. It is easy to get lost in. I give the book a 4 out of 4 because the characters were so engaging and the plot so compelling that I kept thinking about the book throughout the day. It is well written, easy to follow and kept my attention.
The book follows Maya Harrington, the daughter of esteemed scientiest Alex Harrington. Maya didn't know her father had valuable knowledge until he goes missing and it is up to her to find him. Seemingly out of nowhere, a man drops into Maya's life and offers her unlimited resources to help find her father. She is suspicious, but desperately wants to know her father is safe and so accepts.
Before going missing, Alex Harrington created a kind of scavenger hunt for his daughter. He leaves clues pointing her to locations where she can find information that will help her locate him. She and her two best friends Layla and JW start searching. Unfortunately for Maya, she is not the only one looking for him. Throughout her journey a mysterious group is trying to capture her in order to lure her father out of hiding.
The information that they have to rely upon is from ancient texts, mostly biblical. This is one thing I didn't love about the book. Towards the end all events point to a monotheistic diety and all the people start believing in that one diety. It doesn't specify a religion, but one of the locations relied upon in the book is Eden and the text references many biblical characters which strongly suggests Judaism or Christianity. Sometimes it felt like the book could be meant for the Christian section of the bookstore. For some people this will not be off-putting, but for me it was. It was not, however, off-putting enough to make me stop reading.
There are a few warnings for people who are sensitive to certain materials. The book does have a few scenes with graphic violence. There isn't heavy violence throughout. Guns are carried by many of the characters, but are not used. It also contains an attempted-rape scene with vivid descriptions. Other than that one scene, there is not sexual content.
I strongly recommend Lost Secret Of the Ancient Ones to anyone who enjoys action/mystery thrillers. It kept me hooked the whole way through. Be prepared, however, that this book is the start of a series so not all the questions are answered by the end. The reader is left in suspense until volume two. If book two is as entertaining as book one, it will be worth the wait.
