Review by Dotkath -- Don't Quit by Kyle S. Reynolds
Cancer has claimed and continues to claim millions of lives every year. The social and economic effects of cancer are vivid. The disease has brought about suffering, sadness, emptiness, hopelessness, devastation and even poverty as families of cancer patients strive to access treatment for the patients. The side effects of the disease on the patient are even the worst especially when patients undergo chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy which are the most common cancer treatment methods. Lymphedema, neutropenia, hair loss, nausea, vomiting, pain and loss of memory are some of the side effects of cancer treatment.
Don't Quit is a nonfiction story of a survivor, Jason Merkle, of a deadly brain cancer. The story is narrated by Kyle S. Reynolds, a friend of Jason. At the age of thirteen years, Jason was diagnosed with an extreme case of hydrocephalus - a condition in which there is an excess buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain. Later on, the condition transformed into brain tumor. The worst of all, the tumor was located at the stem of the brain and the doctors advised that any surgery attempt would be fatal leaving Jason with chemotherapy and radiotherapy as the only options. To make matters worse, the doctors indicated that there were no survivors of malignant brain cancer in the stem of the brain and that Jason had between two and twelve months to live.
Upon receiving these terrible news from the doctors, Jason and his parents never lost hope. They sought for advice from the best cancer centers nationwide all of which recommended for chemotherapy or radiotherapy but they opted for none of the two. The parents of Jason decided to take him to a clinic that infused antineoplastons that help the body to produce healthy cells. Jason went through the most harrowing moments in his life when undergoing the treatment. What Jason went through is hard to describe not to mention his family. Despite all, Jason had great hope and faith in God.
In whatever you might be going through in life, you need to be hopeful and have unwavering faith in our Creator. By faith Jason got cured of a deadly brain cancer despite what the doctors said. Only God has control over your destiny and hope, faith and prayer are critical in our lives; the story of Jason is a living testimony to this.
This book is very encouraging and I would definitely read it again and again. I was inspired by the hope and faith of this young man, Jason Merkle. He has made me to always remember that life may be stormy but what's important is how I stand and fight the storms. I love the cancer winning strategy recommended by the author based on Jason's experience and the questions that each cancer patient needs to ask a doctor before making a decision on the treatment path to take. For this reason I am glad to rate this book four out of four stars. The book is well edited with very minor errors.
To be honest I would say that there was nothing that I disliked in this book. Even the description of Jason's cancer and the events in his life that made some adrenaline run through my stomach, I took it in a positive way as it made me relate to what people undergo in such deadly moments in life.
If you are going through the worst moments in your life and you feel like life is coming to an end, I recommend this book to you. I also recommend this book to all cancer patients. The book will give you some tips on the kind of lifestyle you need to embrace if you are determined to fight the disease and live long.
Kyle S. Reynolds, thank you for narrating the story of Jason Merkle. The story is a great source of encouragement and hope especially to cancer patients.
