The novel Opaque written by Calix Leigh-Reign is the first of a three-part series. This first book is about a young man named Adam. Adam struggles with everyday life due to an unknown power growing inside of him. He feels like he is trapped in a completely mundane world. He is rescued from this abyss when he meets Carly. Adam and Carly explore their heritage, and Adam is finally able to realize his supernatural abilities. Adam learns he is not a monster, he is a descendant. He and Carly end up fighting the real monsters the Iksha, scientists who have been murdering their kind. It is a thrilling read with an ending leaving you wanting more.

My first reaction when starting this book was that it was going to be very dark. The main character has horrible impulses. My first thought was that this character is pure evil, and there is no way to come back from the things he has done or thought about doing. I hated this character. However, once I got into the book and I learned the reasoning behind his actions, and his internal struggle, I grew to like the character. I ended up rooting for his success and hoped for him to succeed in his quest. Needless to say, this book was a roller coaster of emotion. By the end, I viewed the characters completely different.

Overall, I found this to be a good book for young adults who are interested in fantasy and science fiction. There are many elements and ideas that I have never heard of in another series. It is not your typical superhero book. The ideas for the characters' abilities as well as their backgrounds are original, and therefore make the book much more interesting.

What I enjoyed most about this book was the thought and detail that the writer had for the characters' backgrounds. The story behind the descendants. It was interesting, and I wanted to learn more about where they came from, how they established themselves, and how they were becoming extinct. The book goes into detail however I suspect there is more to learn from the other books of the series. What I didn’t much like about the book was some of the language, understanding that the writer's use of certain words was intentional I found it to be somewhat childish. For example, I didn’t like it when something intense was happening it was noted that it felt like “time stopped”, which happened serval times. It felt a little cheesy. However, I believe that is because it was written for a specific audience.

Overall, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I would recommend it to a mature young adult due to sexuality and violence. It is an interesting book for someone who enjoys reading about the supernatural adventures of teenagers and how they deal with their regular lives, their powers, their relationships, and their enemies. This book does also ends in a way that would make someone want to continue on with the series, while also not completely leaving the readers in the dark.
