Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks by Morton E.Tavel, MD, is a non-fiction book that is divided into three sections: the first section (chapter 1 to chapter 32) provides valuable information regarding dietary decisions. For example, the author describes the benefits of different varieties of foods, ranging from chocolate to red meat. He also clears the confusion about common questions such as the use of artificial sweeteners. The second section (chapter 33 to chapter 52) deals with common misconceptions about various health and nutrition topics like the radiation of foods, gluten-free diets, and probiotics. The third section (chapter 53 to chapter 62) tackles dubious claims made for alternate remedies.

At a time when answers to any questions you have are a few clicks away, and there are varied answers from multiple sources, it is difficult to discern the legibility of any information. In this book, Dr. Tavel provides information regarding health and nutrition by backing his claims with credible scientific literature. It tackles subjects that touch a chord, like the consumption of organic food, the safety of genetically modified foods, the hype surrounding energy drinks.

The writing style of the author is clear and simplistic. Depending on how much information you want to retain, it could be a slow or a quick read. The book is not as in-depth like a textbook, but like a compressed version of the core information in a language that is accessible. The contents of the book are hard to sum up, because the book covers a wide variety of topics in a total of sixty-two (62) chapters. Relevant references are present at the end of the book.

If I had to pick a favorite, it would be the section concerning false cures. The author does a good job tearing apart the bogus health claims perpetrated by so-called “experts” who lure people in with quick fixes, with reason and scientific thinking. The book equips the reader with enough information to make sound decisions regarding their daily lives; it could be as small as eating breakfast daily or buying and consuming organic food.

I give Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks 4 out of 4 stars. There’s nothing that I dislike about the book. It is highly informative and educational. However, it requires a round of editing for typographical errors. There is the use of unnecessary symbols before and after the word “chapter” at the beginning of every chapter and minor formatting errors like misplaced spaces between some letters. I don’t think these issues are big enough to keep me from giving it a full rating, considering the rich content of the book.

The book gets you challenging your assumptions and preconceived notions about different topics on health, making you learn something new. If you are a person who believes that facts matter when it comes to health, then this is the book for you.
