Review by Gordana88 -- Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Livi...
Idiom attack, everyday living/Ataque de modismos, la vida diaria by Peter N. Liptak, Matthew Douma and Jay Douma is a comprehensive workbook for English language learners and a good way to get a good grasp on the daily use of idioms. Idioms being one of the hardest things to learn in a new language, one mostly has to memorize them by heart and they can possibly deter you from your goal- to speak fluently. The reward of learning them well is considerable since they make you sound like a native. This book is a great aid in that process.
I've rated Idiom attack 4 out of 4 stars because the effort put in the collecting of idioms, editing and translation to Spanish is obvious to the reader. The idioms are clearly explained in detail, with the possibility to see these idioms 'in action'- how they're used in sentences, describing daily activities: classes and exams, going out with friends, the weather, traffic and traffic tickets etc.
Other than a simple way of explaining the meaning of idioms, there is often an explanation included in which situation the idiom in question is mostly used and what word it's followed by.
Further, Peter N. Liptak, Matthew Douma and Jay Douma share short stories with the reader which facilitate the memorizing of the idioms used. The stories are followed by a series of questions which invite the reader to talk about the stories, share their own experiences and use the idioms in their own story. Whether used in a classroom or as an independent learner, the reader can jot down their answers to the questions and ace any exam that might follow that includes idioms.
I would recommend this book to anyone learning the English language or simply freshening up their knowledge of idioms- to read, to learn and to keep in their home library.
The final thing worth mentioning about Idiom attack is what the authors themselves state about the book, it is written for the love of language and anyone who loves languages and considers it important to be fluent in English should read it.
