Opaque: Scion Saga Book 1 by Leigh-Reign Calix deserves 4 out of 4 stars. The first chapter entitled 'a dark mind' makes the reader wonder and cringe at the direction the story will take. The title of the first chapter is very appropriate and leads you to believe that you are reading about the development of a psychopath.

The first chapter also makes you question what you know about family relationships. We've all heard the old adage that says a child's first love is their mother. We've also heard that the love between family members can be warped due to extenuating circumstances.

As the story progresses you feel the main character’s alienation from society and experience the consequences of that alienation. You may even feel like giving up on the main character. However, he is bound for redemption and when the turning point comes, albeit slowly, it puts everything in perspective and although all matters are sorted out and explained, you can't help feeling unclean for jumping to conclusions and making judgements before knowing the full extent of the situation.

From the beginning the story takes you into the darkness. As you muddle through it looking for the light, it finally appears in the form of a young lady by the name of Carly. Carly helps Adam put together the pieces of the puzzle that are his current life in addition to helping him find his light in his darkness. Carly and Adam, plus others like them, have powers that are not found in the gene pool of the majority of the human race. They have been hunted and hurt throughout their history because of this. But the time has come to put a stop to the hunting, hurt and deception.

The story combined concepts that I’ve read in other stories. There is the concept of genetic mutations reminiscent of the Marvel comic book series, 'X-Men'; the concept of 'imprinting' presented in 'Twilight', by Stephanie Meyer, and the becoming of a psychopath as in the book 'My Sister Rosa' by Justine Larbalestier.

What I liked most about this book was that it was well written and edited. I did not have to go back and reread pages or sections to make sense of where the story was headed. What I liked least was the profound darkness that enveloped the main character, Adam, from the very beginning, yet, I believe it was essential to the story.
