Review by Munachimso_Nwaogazie -- The Secrets of Living ...
Humans generally go through a lot, from setbacks to painful moments, insecurities, fears, anxieties, and vulnerabilities. Everyone encounters a fair share of either or some of these at one point in their lives or the other. Some people may not be strong or lucky enough to overcome them. For a person to be able to overcome them, part of that is up to that person. The writers of the book, The Secrets of Living A Fantastic Life, Dr. Allen Lycka, and Harriet Tinka, at a point in their lives, experienced life deeply. It was so deep that they taught that they could not overcome it.
Dr. Allen was diagnosed with a terminal disease and was said to have only a few months left to live. He believed that he was too young to die and so, he embarked on a journey to find the cure to his sickness. Surprisingly, he ended up discovering what was more than a cure to the diagnosed disease. Similarly, Harriet was assaulted and left to die by a narcissistic friend. These dark experiences of theirs were enough to convince them to give up on life but they somehow found their feet and the will to live. These were pivotal moments of their life, they could either fight or flee.
Dr. Allen and Harriet had to make the choice of not surrendering to death but to live a fantastic life. About 13 tips of living a fantastic life were given by the writers. They called these tips the Golden pearls. The writers are of the view that in spite of setbacks, we should keep showing love, forgive those who have hurt us deeply and that hating on them isn't the best option but that doing so is synonymous to drinking poison in a bid to hurt another, be an inspiration to ourselves, embrace our vulnerability, and many others.
The book was interactive in nature and this made me view the book in a more realistic manner and not theoretically. I find the book to be an inspiration. The inspirational effect the book had on me can be drawn from the stories and quotes present in the book. Each Golden pearl tip was accompanied by quotes and stories.
While reading the book, I nodded and smiled continuously. There are many views and points to adopt and assimilate. I kept writing and writing. Some parts of the books were invigorating, captivating, a reinforcement of what I already knew, thought-provoking, and soothing to the mind. Others were relatable. I was happy that someone out there actually felt what I feel sometimes. Like Harriet wrote, "When I tell people of my weaknesses, I get a vulnerability hangover. Which means, I regret sharing my weakness." I felt that. I feel that. But she goes on to write that, "but, now I am beginning to realize it’s a strength."
I love the numerous quotes used, it kept me engaged. A lot of them were notable quotes by reputable people in society and they struck me. One of which was, "The wise treat self-respect as non-negotiable, and will not trade it for health or wealth or anything else.” This reminds me of Beyonce's speech to the class of 2020 where she said, "the world will respect you as much as you respect yourself."
The book was professionally edited and I found no vulgar word, phrase, or erotic content. I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars because it seeks to give hope to the hopeless, strength to those who don't have one and help to those who are in need of one. This book will appeal to those that have been through a lot and are finding their feet, to those who are looking for where to find hope and anyone interested in reading about the stories of others.
