Commander Jason Cody sets out to save the universe from annihilation, but first, he and Lieutenant Janet 'Cat' Miles must overcome their captors. Trapped in a mutilated body by aliens with a link to his past, Jason is determined to escape come hell or high water and take the lethal Cat with him. The key to all his plans lies with a chance encounter in his youth that changed his life and granted him extended abilities. Unknown to him at the time, it also introduced the menace orchestrating his current situation. Escaping is only half the task at hand. They must face betrayal, political machinations, and the ultimate foe while unraveling the mystery of a planet that reverses direction and disappears at will.

While Jason Cody and Cat Miles are the central figures, Captain Knight is an impressive leader, and the ladies of the Fighting Furies are the crew you want at your back in a fight. The creatures they battle are fearsome and unique, and the battlefield is as troublesome as the enemy. Add shape-shifting allies that may or may not be friends, and you have an action-filled quest to protect an unsuspecting universe from the devil himself. The secret of the optical lasso is Jason's ace in the hole and he vows to protect it at all costs.

The Optical Lasso: Beware of Neptune's Dark Side by Marc Corwin takes the reader on an epic journey filled with battles, monsters, and wise-cracking characters with superpowers. It is a delightful blend of science fiction and superhero adventure, Corwin strings together improbable themes and makes them work while showing that right makes might. His characters are well rounded and fun to read. Enough backstory is included to create empathy and understanding of the situation. The good guys are great, and the bad guys are horrible in true space opera/superhero style. The book is very well edited, and I give it a 4 out of 4 stars. I'd love to see another book with the same characters.

I enjoyed the Fighting Furies, and Jason Cody is the ultimate unstoppable hero. Cat Miles is his match in battle and in humorous quips. The tone is light-hearted entertainment with dark currents. The book contains gore, violence, and some profanity. There are frequent passages referencing God, Satan, faith, and prayer. Some readers may find this offensive or annoying. All readers of superhero or science fantasy novels should enjoy the twists and surprises awaiting them within this book.
