Review by mairu -- Karima Speak by Orlando Stephenson
Orlando Stephenson’s ‘Karima Speak’ is the second book in the Daryl Morgan and Roger Truscott series where they go on a roller coaster of a ride to rescue Daryl’s one true love: Judy in Morocco. Along the way, they rescue quick-witted Karima who’s had some punches rolled at her from life but nonetheless makes lemonade out of her lemons. Recruited by Fatima and her crew, mastermind plans and quick escapes are in store for the gang.
The book appears to place importance on Karima, more specifically her pidgin English which she fondly refers to as ‘Karima Speak’, which is the title of the novel. Personally, I think one reason why Stephenson chose to name his novel after the character's form of speech is possibly, that it allows the reader to understand how her pidgin English adds to her charisma and charm.
Stephenson lures the reader into the book with the chemistry between the characters, right off the bat, I knew I was drawn to the dynamic between characters from the flirty banter to the serious moments of tested loyalty. Each character’s personality is very vivid and carves a place into the reader's heart, Fatima is the mastermind of it all whilst the gang are quick thinkers on their feet, I personally feel that Fatima stood out for me because of how her character was portrayed as a strong female leader which can be uncommon in action books.
What I liked most about the book was that there was a variation of genres used whilst still being balanced so well as well as keeping true to the nature of the action-filled novel. I chose this as my most liked feature because it maintains the balance within the book which keeps the reader hooked. The book manages to cover romance, thriller, action as well as some dark topics about sexual abuse, although it seems like a lot to take on at first, Stephenson blends the genres together perfectly. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy elements of different genres in a book
What I disliked most was how quickly Karima’s feelings towards Daryl dissipated once Omari arrived and suddenly was head over heels for him. It was just rather confusing how quickly her intense feelings towards her ‘Sindeed’ (a name she chose for Daryl), had faded away. Whilst the reader still enjoys the appearance of the character Omari and his relationship with Karima, it can still leave the reader craving some sort of closure for the confusing relationship between Daryl and Karima.
I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars because of the spelling error
