Review by Whats-the-name -- Walks of Life by Doug Wheat
To be honest, I chose this book, Walks of Life : Your Journey Back to Nature, only by title. I usually read the summary first, but I simply did not know where to find it. And seeing the title I imagined it was about "different walks of life," representing different people's life story. So my poor knowledge for both the Internet and the book itself caused my encounter with this book, which, I would say, consequently turned out to be a nice one.
This book gives the readers various ideas and advices for stepping into the natural world. It explains what we shall take, what sort of insects and animals, whether dangerous or not, we may come across and so on when climbing the mountain.
I go hiking just occasionally, which makes me a beginner, and the book taught me about different problems and solutions that I almost never thought about. What I like about this book is that it does not use too much technical words that make it difficult for ordinary people to read. It is fairly easy for books describing nature to end up discussing exclusive theory, but this one is not that kind most of the time. Middle-school knowledge will usually do, and even when it does not readers can learn by reading the explanations. The author, Doug Wheat, describes the pure beauty of the natural world in a way that makes it imaginable. As I read through the text, I could almost feel the breeze in the forest and hear the river running and birds singing. It is not only about those peaceful moments, though, because he definitely did not forget to mention about difficult situations.
Also, checking the grammar I did not find any particular mistakes. It was well-edited.
When I think of shortcomings of this book I would say it is a bit too long and sometimes difficult to read. The readers should expect it to be a long journey and read little by little to enjoy, especially if they are hiking beginners like me.
Overall, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The reason I do not give this book less stars is that reading this book will not only teach lessons on what happens in an outdoors adventure, but also give audiences the feeling of actually walking in the forest. This is helpful especially under this circumstance where a lot of people all around the world have to stay home instead of going somewhere else. On the other hand, I do not give it a full four stars because it gets sometimes difficult for beginners to read. I did not understand all of the theories Doug Wheat mentioned in the book by only reading the text, and the length felt a bit excess.Yet the knowledge that can be gained is valuable, and anyone, young or old, who love the atmosphere in the forest would enjoy this book.
