From what I’ve gathered over the years, people tend to shy away from outright conflict. Usually, if someone does something extreme, its because something drastic was done to them or something complicated is going on. I couldn’t help but follow this train of thought while reading Jack Winnick’s East Wind, the second edition to be precise. In this novel, one really can’t help but ponder what exactly drives people to do certain things and to what extent something would have to alter them to find something acceptable or not.

The novel centers around how the Palestinian terrorist group Hezbollah launches a successful terrorist attack in the form of a nuclear strike on Los Angeles Harbor. This, of course, launches a major joint operation between Israeli and United States Authorities to find out how they did it and bring them to justice. Each side supplies Uri and Lara respectively to work together to try and find the people responsible and prevent another heinous act in a cross-country investigation into the notorious crime and terrorist plots.

The book delivers on precisely what one expects to find in a realistic crime thriller and then some. The pacing in the story was good, the delivery superb, and the plot was overall engaging. It’s quite understandable why this story was re-released as it hits all the marks of an excellent addition to the genre. Anyone who enjoys things related to crime, politics, clandestine operations, anything that invokes the whole spy and investigation motifs will find this book enjoyable.

However, I would go as far as to say that the story gets somewhat real at times, both in concept and execution. These are threats and problems that governments the world over have to deal with and combat, and that can be a little frightening to think of the idea that stuff like this could theoretically happen. Thankfully sufficient safeguards are in place to prevent people from carrying out their deeds, but it can still be quite troubling. For those who tend to think a bit too much or are a tad faint of heart, this may not be the right kind of book.

I found the book to be quite enjoyable, and I feel most other readers would find it enjoyable as well. For review purposes, I would have to give the book a 4 out of 4 stars. It does what it tries to well, and for the most part, I don’t think too many people will be displeased.
