The Mindset gives readers an intriguing account of the author Ace Bowers’ rise from poverty. This memoir encourages readers to use the challenges of their daily lives as sources of motivation. Growing up, Ace Bowers’ life was far from perfect. His parents' abuse of alcohol led to frequent confrontations and a life of poverty. Ace was embarrassed by both his living situation as well as his family.

He went to a school where students were privileged and sheltered from the challenges of everyday life. While his friends had new school supplies each term, he had to recycle the ones handed down to him by his siblings. He was very self-conscious about this and that led to him constantly lying to his friends about his situation. After high school, his friends left for college and his sister, who was a monumental figure in his life, left home. He was unemployed, living with his alcoholic parents, burying himself in debt and unknowingly ruining his creditworthiness.

When Ace found the courage to leave home, he fell in love with a young lady who helped him to change the direction of his life. Ace was working a janitorial job when he learned that she was pregnant. He was barely making enough money to feed himself and now he will be responsible for a family of his own. It was at that moment that he decided he wanted a different life for his family. He wanted his child to have the childhood that he never had. This became his motivation and led to a change in his mindset. He worked his way from janitorial duties to become a multi-millionaire in Silicon Valley.

What I liked the most was the authors’ courage to tell his story in an attempt to inspire others to find their motivation. It is not your typical memoir that is hundreds of pages in length. It is short and truly inspiring. It was written with the aim of encouraging readers to achieve their full potential. I admire the fact the author was able to highlight the challenges that he faced in his life and his internal struggles to overcome them. For readers who are not fans of memoirs or those who are looking for a step by step self-help book, this one is not for you. It does not provide a guide to getting rich quickly. It helps you to motivate yourself to change your situation. I was unable to identify any aspect of the book that I disliked.

I gave this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was well written and edited. I noted a few typos, but these did not take away from the message that the author was trying to convey.
