The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings

Four women frequently take weekends off to unwind from their daily hectic lives and catch up whilst enjoying their favorite sport of fly fishing. On one of such outings, they end up rescuing a naked girl from the river, Melody, a nineteen-year-old free-spirited photographer. After the incident, she gets acquainted with the women and she soon becomes a part of the group. She is introduced to the fly fishing sport and in no time, she also falls deeply in love with the sport. When their vacation comes to an end, the women return to their usual routines and the author tells us in each woman’s voice what their life is like outside fly fishing. At the time they least expect it, tragedy strikes but it only serves to bring the women closer together and make them stronger.

The Reel Sisters is an incredible tale of five women who bond and find true friendship over the exotic sport of fly fishing. Despite being very different from one another and having nothing else in common apart from their intense love for fly fishing, these women find amazing and lasting friendships with one another. They learn from one another several lessons acquired from their life experiences and of course from fly fishing. These women give the readers insights into the exotic sport of fly fishing and embedded in their fly fishing teachings are life tips for better living as well. According to Sophie, the girls are just like the different fly fishing instruments, each contributing differently to the group in their capacity.

The story dwells a lot on the sport of fly fishing and on the theme of friendship. To most people, it may seem like the book's major focus is on the topic of fly fishing but I sincerely think that Michelle Cummings made use of the sport to trigger the subject of friendship. Although fly fishing brings them together, these women even outside of the sport still love, care for and look after one another. They help one another out in whatever way they can and always look forward to their fly fishing mini vacations together. They are each other’s support system and they help each other get through turbulent times together. To quote Rose, the eldest of the group, “Friendship is a great gift, one that should never be taken for granted. The capacity of a woman’s heart for her friends is vast, so vast it is hard to comprehend sometimes.”

My best part of the book is the graphic description of the sport and the very detailed explanation of how fly fishing is done. The author explains it with such skills that as a reader, you feel as if you are out there with these women at the bank of the Arkansas River casting your fly and hoping to catch a big trout. Before reading this book, I had never heard of fly fishing but this book has piqued my interest and I am definitely including it in my bucket list. I also love that the story was written in each woman's point of view which made it a more exciting read. Furthermore, I like that there is a little bit of romance in it too so you don’t get bored from reading only about fly fishing adventures. Lastly, I must mention that the title The Reel Sisters is very befitting to the story. There is a play on the word ‘reel’ which obviously refers to one of the fly fishing instruments and that makes a lot of sense seeing as the women not only bond over the sport but practically become sisters owing to the sport. At the same time, the word ‘reel’ implies real and is very subtly used to mean that the women are indeed genuine sisters.

I didn’t find a thing that I dislike about this book; I love every aspect of it. The end perhaps for me is really tragic, very sad and unexpected but everything else is as close to perfection as it can possibly be. Although for some people, the details on the fly fishing sport might be a bit overwhelming.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I think it is well-deserving of it. I enjoyed reading it, the grammar flowed smoothly and all in all, the book was a great read. I absolutely recommend this book to everyone that can get their hands on it especially to those who like reading about new things. If you are already into fly fishing, this is definitely a must-read for you and if you are someone who would like a break from the regular romance books, this can also be a good book to get started with.
