The Don't Mind Me, I'm Just Having a Bad Life of Lewis Kempfer is about the life of a gay trying to tell his story from when he was young until he grew up. The book shows a good representation of how gays are seen in the society and how masculinity is measured. It contains erotic contents like kinky activities or such and vulgar and curse words.

In the beginning of the book, I thought the book has a typical plot and is not my type of genre but when I continued reading it, it actually have a very interesting plot. Yes, it is very unusual type of story that I would read but the author was able to get my attention on the story and get me so into it which is very unlikely with the title that says Don't Mind Me.

While reading the book, I can feel myself being so drowned with every lines because of its heavy message or maybe just because of the message itself, alone, regardless how heavy it was. It even came to a point wherein sometimes the lines or the experiences that the character is going through is something that I can relate myself with or something that I just hate to witness in real life. Which is a good thing too because the author just able to portray the character in the book and send the message very loud and clear for the readers by writing everything into detailed.

However, my only problem while reading the book was, because the author wrote it in detailed, there are some chapters where it is already getting boring to the point that I want to skip some pages and just go directly to the ending of the story. There are chapters where I find the life of the character revolving on the same kind of experiences and nothing is really going on with the character's life. As a reader, I would have love to see the life of the character evolving into more interesting events and the character actually evolving to a new character as well. I mean since the book illustrates a timeline, it would have been good to see the character maturing with all the worst nightmares he went through. So if as a reader, you are impatient then I don't think this is a good book for you.

Anyway, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because the author made the whole book very interesting and very realistic although there are chapters that it gets boring but the book explicitly portrays the life of a HIV positive gay in a manner that is totally opposite of how the society sees them. Also, the author illustrated gang bang, rape, and other sexual harassment in this book which I think is a great eye opener for the people who have misconceptions with men having sexual intercourse with another man and an eye opener as well for the reality that men are also victims of such scenarios like sexual harassment and rape. So I will not recommend this book to people who have a very shallow and close-minded thinking because I don't think this is a book that they would appreciate.
