Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty is the first book in a young adult science fiction novel series. The book follows a ship, Solaris, who has a personality all her own. And her captain, Rynah, who has to flee her home planet after a magic crystal is stolen from her home planet. The crystal was keeping her home planet stable, and now it is too dangerous to live there.
Rynah is determined to stop the man who stole the crystal and begins a search for similar crystals. To get a crew, Solaris transports four humans, from different time periods, onto the ship to help Rynah.
I give Solaris Seethes 2 out of 4 stars. What I disliked most about the book are plot inconsistencies and sentences that are hard to read. It does not have blaring punctuation or spelling errors. But, it does contain grammatical errors throughout the book. It has many sentences that include extraneous information. The book needs a thorough content edit.
A sample sentence from the book, "As the ground quaked one last time, the ship plowed through the ceiling of the hangar, leaving a hole that would anger the groundskeeper under normal circumstances, and charged into the smoke filled sky, a sky that had once been a light lavender in color." An example of incorrect grammar is this phrase, "...only a few lights remained lighted."
The plot inconsistencies have to do with choices that Rynah makes. She decides to return to her crumbling and unstable home planet. Even though it was so dangerous she previously fled for her life. At one point she runs from enemies because her crew is outnumbered. But later confronts those same enemies while still being outnumbered. The reader is left to wonder why the journey takes these unexpected turns.
Although the story needs a good edit, I gave it two stars instead of one because it does have an interesting story. Some of the characters are well developed and lovable. What I liked the most about the book was the personality of the ship and the Viking character.
I do not think the hero of the book, Rynah is very well-developed. It is hard to empathize with her as she acts like a rude, selfish, jerk up until the last few pages of the book.
Young adults may enjoy the general story and characters in this book but I think they would find it hard to follow due to the unnecessarily complex sentences and unclear plot progression. I personally, would not give it to my teens.
Although a part of me would like to keep reading to find out how this saga ends, I will not. I find the bad grammar, inconsistent plot choices, and unlovable main character, ruin the potential magic of this story for me.
